I stuck a big old rose on my hat today, and now I feel much better about it, so I declare it Done. I may or may not have worn it around the house today for a couple of hours, to test out exactly where it needed to be pinned to stay on my head...

Haaat

What else? Uh...well, I did laundry and actually folded and put it all away? On the same day! (This is still a rare enough accomplishment to be noteworthy.) I also stabbed myself a whole bunch of times while trying to sew ribbon over the boning channels on the corset, which is why I got mad enough to sew crap to the hat instead. Sometimes your fingers are just not having it...

The Imaginary and I spent the day in Cape May yesterday, which while very fun and all that (we climbed both the WW2 tower and the lighthouse, so very excercise-y too) meant that I sewed zilch yesterday. I'll still count it as research for my eventual shore trip in costume. Assessment: while I do enjoy Cape May day tripping, it's very crowded, and very commercial, and while I still like to have stuff to do on a shore trip, I prefer someplace that feels less frenetic. I know all shore towns in Jersey are crawling with people in the summer, but some are a bit less crawl-y! Also some places you can still get a room for under $200/night...Cape May is not one of those places!

My sewing day progress on Sunday was mildly helpful - not really as much as I should have gotten done, but not too terrible. Except that I sewed trim on the jacket that, in retrospect, I don't like, so I'll have to pick that off. You'd think I'd have learned from the skirt... I used a narrower strip of silk on the jacket, and thought that would fix what I didn't like about the skirt trim, but it seems not. Oops. I didn't HATE it, it just felt...off. Narrow ribbon or braid will be better, I think. And honestly, after a decade and a half of costuming, I trust my instinct when something feels "off"! So, most likely no trim for the first wearing. Which is okay! I'd rather be untrimmed than be regretfully trimmed, LOL.

I *think* I've now ordered everything I need to finish this outfit! Damn little bits and pieces that can't be got locally...

(Although I could technically pick up the corset supplies, because they're based in Philly. But between cost of either bridge tolls + gas, or two trains, it's about equal to the cost of USPS shipping. Or so I tell myself. And Fishtown's not a part of the city I would tend to be 'in the area' anyway...also, lazy. I ordered last night around 11pm and I'll probably get it tomorrow. They're very prompt.)

And HELLO the price of silk satin ribbon's gone up! Not shocking, because they really weren't kidding with the tariffs, but still, yowch. I usually get it from Farmhouse Fabrics as they have the best selection of widths and colors, but I ended up buying from silky_way on ebay instead, as I decided it didn't need to be satin. Thinner, cheaper stuff is fine for this - it's just to cover the boning casings on the outside of the corset. And 1/8" to thread through the lace at the chemise neckline, as I'd really rather it didn't fall off.

ALSO tea. Tea is always very necessary to sewing. When it's ten thousand degrees out I'll break down and have it iced, but it's still necessary. (Also Harney's sent me a coupon so I pretty much had to order something, right? Robin will hate it all because it's mint gunpowder green, cherry blossom green, pineapple something something green, and this new "Indigo Punch" that I really only bought because I really want it to be that bright purple color. I realize it's probably not quite that purple but a girl can hope.)

My hat is prooobably done...I'm letting it sit around for a while, so I can stare at it and decide if it needs anything else stuck on it before wearing. Happily, there's still a few weeks to do that. And I poked the corset a little more today, basted on the waist tape and finished the eyelets.

(Hand sewn eyelets. Highly questionable for 1900, but the big clunky metal grommets I have on hand are really too much for this lightweight little corset, and I'm still trying to cheap out on the materials! Hand sewn eyelets are free! And it's not as if it's going to be under undue pressure...I don't think you could tightlace in a summer mesh corset even if you wanted.)

sewing?

I've got out of the habit of posting here, haven't I? Even reading, really...a lot of my former routines have tapered off, and I still just want to crawl into a nice dark hole somewhere and pull it in after me. Mmff.

But, sewing! I finished Robin's somewhat absurd Great War-era hat in time to give it to her at our stitch-n-bitch this past Sunday. It's wrinkly in places I didn't quite want it to be wrinkly but overall I'm pretty pleased with its absurdity! IMO this picture does not do it justice. ;) You can't capture its bigness in a selfie!

On Sunday I couldn't decide what to sew post-hat, so I started something new - a beach coat from a 1950s Simplicity pattern reprint. I am not particularly a Shore Person, but the Imaginary Boyfriend is rather more of a Shore Person, so I actually had to buy a bathing suit this year, and I needed something a half-step up from an oversized T-shirt for a coverup. (Come on, I've got a reputation to maintain here...)

Said beach coat was roundly mocked at sewing day, but some people just don't understand the fun of becoming extra-crispy when out in the sun all day! Hat, coverup, and SPF...mock me all you want but I have no intention of becoming a lobster in the short term, or an old leather bag in the long term. So nyah.

It's mostly done at this point, just needs a button and the hem finished. I made it of white linen (with contrast facings/pockets/waist tie of blue print cotton), because I had it on hand and because lightweight linen = good in hot weather, and only when it was sewn together did I realize I had made a very meticulously sewn lab coat. Hah. Oops. Hopefully it's a cute lab coat?

We're currently planning to go to Ocean City for the day on Sunday, so I may have pictures after that. Possibly.

I didn't get a lot of actual sewing done today (though I may finish sewing snaps on the skirt after I post this, since I finished the petticoat today and this could mark where the snaps needed to go), but I feel accomplished all the same. I have a tendency to leave thinking about hair til the the of the event, and when it's something I'm unfamiliar with, I really shouldn't do that!

[livejournal.com profile] reine_de_coudre's quick-and-dirty 1920s hair tutorial inspired me - 20s and teens hair are very closely related, I've discovered. (As an aside, that seems to be one thing they did change for Downton Abbey...the majority of hairdos in period photographs I've seen have more volume and might even be termed "frizzy", whereas even the curled hairdos of the Downton ladies are sleeker and much more flattering to our modern eyes. Since my hair is a big fan of "frizzy", I am all for that option.)

Samantha recommended a waving iron in her tutorial, so I went out and bought me one today. It was on sale, so I got a fun one with an adjustable barrel - can make the waves bigger or smaller. The smaller ones will be perfect for 20s, but the larger ones looked better for teens I thought. And yes, I then went to work with my hair waved in a different width on either side of my head. Heh.

It's not too bad, all things considered! And now I can see what adjustments to make - mainly get the whole thing up a little higher off my neck (though not too much because hat), and hide that rat a little better, oops.

And hat on head, because I couldn't resist.

FEATHAHS, YO.

Also, when I tried on the outfit, I was struck anew with the awful snausage-ness of it all, so I'm leaning towards making a belt and not worrying about the jacket at all. Although interestingly, according to the forecast, if we're there all day, I might want the jacket! (I'm always cold, shut up.)

It looks like a demented pirate hat, actually. But it will definitely liven up my outfit! I admit it's completely ridiculous, but this page is full of completely ridiculous 1913-15 hats (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jenthompson for that link!), and I wanted one. Now I've got one!

My box o'feathers came in the mail today...along with my box o'cheap silk, and box o'Regency-ballgown-from-[livejournal.com profile] reine_de_coudre. It was a most excellent mail day! Anyway, since I had the feathers, I thought I ought to get cracking on my hat, seeing as HI EVENT COMING UP. And it didn't take me long at all, just an afternoon to chop down the brim, wire it, and decide what crap to stick on it. (Rooster feathers. A lot of rooster feathers.)

Demented pirate hat, ahoy! (See what I did there...)

Now...to work on the jacket mockup or make the waistband for the petticoat? Decisions!
mandie_rw: (downton1)
Or is it a waist still? I don't actually know. Feel free to correct me!

Tuesday night my back decided it was going to be mad at me, and has proceeded to be cranky ever since. I didn't do anything to it or sleep funny...apparently I'm just a senior citizen now. I actually wore my old effigy stays to work today, and other than slightly pokey armpits and a really odd silhouette I think it was quite helpful! Back support and all, y'know.

Anyway, that means I've been sewing at half-speed, and cutting at maybe quarter speed...which is pretty damn slow. I finally put the finishing touches on the blouse (buttons and hem), and cut out my skirt pieces today.
Pictures! )
mandie_rw: (downton1)
Hah, I finished one!

(Well TECHNICALLY it's not done, because I realized while taking pictures of the coat that I hadn't taken out the basting stitches, but I'm going to do that when I'm done on here, so IT COUNTS.)

1913(ish) coat & hat are done - my feathers came in on Friday, so I could declare the hat done as well, so yay. Now...I still have to make the 1913 dress, plus challenge #2 if I can. More on that later.

I'm too lazy to post all the pictures again over here, so you can go over to the blog for more pictures and a bit of a writeup if you like!
mandie_rw: (downton1)
Not trimmed yet - I have ribbon and a fun decorative buckle to put on said ribbon from my bag o'random buckles (why yes, I have one of those, doesn't everyone?), but the only feathers I have at the moment are white ostrich and peacock, and I do not like either of them on this hat. And this is a Needs Feathers kind of hat. Trust me on this.

But it's put together, which is good! I'll put the ribbon on tonight, and order the feathers so I can just stick them on when they get here.

Poorly lit, bad quality pictures under the cut )

It'll be more impressive trimmed! Probably.

Look, a hat

Or, Amanda's BS Millinery. All I know about hats, I learned on the internet.

I could have started on the red dress today, but thought I'd try this crazy new idea of finishing projects before starting new ones. I'm sure that won't last long...but I do need the hat too! And I'll feel all accomplished when it's done.

Which, no, it is not, but it is at the stage where I can put it on my head, so it's almost like it's done! This feels like the most time I've ever taken to make a hat...it might be, but I did have to sew all the straw braid back together, so that took a while. And I do sew all my hats by hand - the only time I glued a hat was my red spoon bonnet, and it showed on the outside and it pissed me off (Your hat is BAD and you should feel BAD). Glue and I do not actually work well together.

So, BS Millinery in pictures, 'cause I felt like it.

It doesn't look like much yet, I admit, but that's hours of work in that ugly thing!

In which I talk about thinking about the sewing I ought to be doing right now...

Actually I was fairly good last night, after spending hours and hours on the internet (HAD TO CATCH UP!), I worked out most of the maths for my dress. Tucks regrettably take maths, you know. They're probably wrong, but I guess we'll find out soon...The lovely [livejournal.com profile] jenthompson sent me a similar pattern to the Past Patterns one I'm copying (without the pattern, hurr), which was extremely helpful! There are some differences, mainly the position of the waist, but it really helped my tiny brain to see those pattern shapes!

I was actually all ready to start cutting, when I remembered I hadn't washed any of my fabric. Oh dammit. So I pushed that off til today, and sewed some flowers on my hat instead!

Cut for pics )
And now I have to go iron my fabric so I can at least get the basic dress cut out tonight!
