Look, a hat

Or, Amanda's BS Millinery. All I know about hats, I learned on the internet.

I could have started on the red dress today, but thought I'd try this crazy new idea of finishing projects before starting new ones. I'm sure that won't last long...but I do need the hat too! And I'll feel all accomplished when it's done.

Which, no, it is not, but it is at the stage where I can put it on my head, so it's almost like it's done! This feels like the most time I've ever taken to make a hat...it might be, but I did have to sew all the straw braid back together, so that took a while. And I do sew all my hats by hand - the only time I glued a hat was my red spoon bonnet, and it showed on the outside and it pissed me off (Your hat is BAD and you should feel BAD). Glue and I do not actually work well together.

So, BS Millinery in pictures, 'cause I felt like it.

Demonstrably crappy straw. Which is why I took the extra time to cover it all in flannel - that would show through, don't tell me it wouldn't. Ew. Plus that means I'm done getting stabbed by tiny bits of straw, which is always a bonus! It's allll over the house at this point.

Well, I didn't say I did a pretty job of covering it in flannel! Frankly it looks pretty awful. I usually do try a little harder, but this thing's going to get covered in velveteen, not thin silk, so it won't matter. Probably. And the edges of the brim totally are wonky; that's straw for you.

Sewn together! Yay! And covered in lint, cat hair, and velveteen fuzzies! Yay!

And the ugly straw guts that are going to be covered up with lining - because I've learned the hard way that straw WILL catch my hair and pull it. And be stabbity all day. More work to line it, but much more functional. And pretty. Everyone likes pretty!

It doesn't look like much yet, I admit, but that's hours of work in that ugly thing!
