Or, My 1913 Pimp Coat.

I went to the Titanic exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philly yesterday with a small group; [livejournal.com profile] dragoneyes19 did a nice write-up of the actual exhibit that I'm linking to because I'm too lazy to write it all out - suffice it to say they did a very good job, and we were all very impressed! They even had a replica of the Grand Staircase that you could have a professional photographer capture you on. I had mine taken, but wasn't impressed enough to pay for it at the end of the whole thing. :P That face was not worth seven dollars, trust me!

Photography wasn't allowed in the exhibit, so I only got a few shots ("I need full-lengths of this outfit!!") myself, but here they are...

Hmm, I never did post pictures of me at the Francaise Dinner, did I? Oops. Here we go. Photobucket album.

Hah, I finished one!

(Well TECHNICALLY it's not done, because I realized while taking pictures of the coat that I hadn't taken out the basting stitches, but I'm going to do that when I'm done on here, so IT COUNTS.)

1913(ish) coat & hat are done - my feathers came in on Friday, so I could declare the hat done as well, so yay. Now...I still have to make the 1913 dress, plus challenge #2 if I can. More on that later.

I'm too lazy to post all the pictures again over here, so you can go over to the blog for more pictures and a bit of a writeup if you like!

Just have to stick some fake fur on this thing and it'll be finished. Oh, and closures - a snap or something, who knows. I'll probably wait til tomorrow to do that.

Y'know, for something ostensibly "machine sewn", I''ve done a damn lot of hand finishing on this thing!

Not much (since I actually left the house again today, hooray), but better than nothing. I finally got all the layers cut out - purple crushed velvet top fabric, really ugly beige rayon for lining (it was $2/yd so I don't even care), and cotton flannel so it's actually warm like a coat should be! The flannel ended up needing to be pieced quite a bit - out of the scrap bin plus narrower than the velvet and rayon.

And then I had to hand-baste all the layers together, which was about as annoying as it sounds. The coat's actually just one piece - I literally folded the fabric in half, cut up the front half, and pinned one side til I had something vaguely coat-shaped. Take off, unpin, and cut other side to match.

Which is great and all,but awful getting layers to match up. The velvet likes to creep. I wouldn't even think of trying to bag-line this thing!

Anyway, the layers got about two-thirds basted together before I went out for dinner and didn't come back until an hour ago, so that's where it's being left for tonight! Maybe tomorrow I'll actually get the TWO seams on the coat sewn...

Um...

More on the Pennsbury stays tomorrow (I had a busy day!), but I got my pretty crushed velvet for the teens coat in the mail today, and it hit me: red dress, purple coat...

PEOPLE ARE GOING TO THINK I'M A RED HAT LADY, OH MY GOD.

*facepalm*

Well...it's 80% rayon so it'll probably dye, but I got the purple so I wouldn't have to bother dyeing it! (They only had purple and white in stock. If I'd realized, I would have just gotten the white!)

BUT I DON'T WANT TO BE A RED HAT LADY. *flails around a bit*
