mandie_rw: (late 1830s couple)
The other day, I asked on Facebook whether to go to a Victorian picnic or a 1920s lawn party event next Saturday, because I couldn't decide (the point being to drag The Imaginary along with me). The general population voted 1920s, I was leaning towards Victorian because I'm apparently just that contrary...and then I was mindlessly scrolling this afternoon and saw a post about a concert in a cemetery, with an ensemble that included a theremin. Well that sounds cool. Oh, it's Laurel Hill in Philly? And it's this Saturday. So, easy decision - I won't do either original option, and will go to the Laurel Hill concert instead! (I mean, there's no scheduling conflict, but I'm trying to keep an eye on the Fun Budget and the cost of the concert is exactly the cost of the picnic, which was the cheaper of the two.)

Ahh, decisions.

Speaking of decisions...I decided to buy myself a Late Victorian Redthreaded corset. (Talk about blowing your Fun Budget...) But I really need a new corset for the Virginia trip, unless I want to be stuck wearing the uncomfortable old 1860s corset again (as that's what I've been doing for 1890s up to this point), and I really don't want to make it. I've been waffling about it pretty much since the trip was planned, because I like being able to customize my corsets, and I can make a decent-if-not-outstanding corset...but you know what, I have a Big Girl Job, and what the hell am I working for if not to be able to throw my money at my silly middle-class hobbies every so often?

Plus I'm supporting a small, woman-owned business! Always a good thing, right?

It's not the specific style I was originally planning (I wanted a specific late-1890s style, which comes in right before the S-curve and has some characteristics that distinguish it from the 80s and earlier 90s styles)...but I can learn to live with a slightly more generic/less fashionable style if I didn't have to go to the trouble of making it! :D

Was going to sew today after school. Napped and fabric shopped online instead!

Somewhat in my defense, I want to make a new dress to wear to Grandmom's memorial service (she loved that I sewed stuff!), and of course I couldn't POSSIBLY use one of the seven thousand fabrics already IN the stash, no. Plus, you know, stimulus payment. Most of it's going to sensible bill-paying, but I deserve a treat, and a treat for me is a fabric-buying spree, LOL. Plus Farmhouse Fabrics is a small business! *nods*

(I miiiight also pre-order the new AD "Sophie" mules, but that feels extra-frivolous as the locals have mainly given up doing 18thc! If my size sells out before I'm done waffling I'll know I wasn't supposed to get them...)
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
Still giving the old sewing finger a break, so I did a bit more etsy-work - took off the exceptionally terrible waistband on my old 1840s flounced petticoat and put in a drawstring. Less correct but presumably more sell-able. I haven't done 1840s in years (my one dress is now defunct), and if I ever do it again I'll make less shitty petticoats! So that is hopefully going bye-bye. Which would be good because it takes up a damn lot of room.

I decided to try and get the short hoop out of the way as much as possible (since, hey, that's not hand sewing, right?). Got the last casing sewn on, sewed on the waistband, and boned all but one channel. I was really hoping the cutters I bought once upon a time for hoop boning would work, but no dice. Hoop steel was heavier but white steel is wider, so these aren't cutting it (hurr hurr hurr). I'm just about out of plastic whalebone anyway, so it appears a corsetmaking.com order is...in order.

Somewhat related to sewing: I decided ages ago (like when I got the tickets) that I wanted, nay, needed a new dress for the Dita von Teese show, found some fun embroidered net on ebay, and cheerfully bought it. I'm off this weekend, so I figured it's high time to crank that dress out...and then last night I went on Unique Vintage and found the exact dress I was going to make, on clearance, for $35. So I bought it. xD Alright, it isn't the exact dress, but it's pretty darn close! The embroidery on the net's a little finer, and the black skirt's a little shorter, but those are the exact sleeves I was going to do...and $35 is well worth a cute dress! (And I won't mind having two dresses of similar fabric, when I get around to using my fabric...mom and I have tickets to the Pennsylvania Ballet season this year, so I need fancy dresses. ;) )

I finished sewing the hooks and bars on this afternoon before work, but didn't quite have enough time to suit up and start fussing with fit, so indulged in flights of fancy re: my planned turn-of-the-century wardrobe. (My Voice of Fashion and Turn-of-the-Century Fashion Patterns and Tailoring Techniques books arrived yesterday, so that helped with the distraction. The latter may be a bit beyond me, but I never mind having something to work up to, and at the very least the pattern shapes will be helpful!) I sincerely doubt I'll have time to throw a dinner dress into the mix, but it's very amusing to plan out!

Tonight I intend to get the buttons sewn on the beige bodice (yes, buttons over hooks...after testing out hooks and bars vs buttons for years, I've come to the conclusion that I generally prefer hooks to fasten tight-fitting victorian bodices! Much less annoying to do up! And then slap the buttons on top), which was delayed by my putting the buttons away while cleaning up a while back. Never put stuff away!

Also: spent money today I totally shouldn't have. But Dita von Teese added Philadelphia to her touring schedule this fall, and the pre-sale went up today...and I just couldn't not go! I'm much more of an enthusiast of Dita's style than necessarily burlesque in general (I think it's cool! but I wouldn't call myself an enthusiast), but I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to see Queen Dita! I texted a college friend who's also a fan..."can we turn this opportunity down??" "NO WE CANNOT!"...so I'll be going with her on September 15th. Woo!

(Well I think I need a new dress...!)

mandie_rw: (WC market)
Ok, didn't quite get the painted petti hemmed yet...I had a couple of things I needed to shop for (or "needed" to shop for, like my ice skates for my birthday party), and then somehow I ended up spending 45 minutes on Sock Dreams' website picking out Christmas presents! Well, 'tis the season to start thinking about those, so I don't really consider it wasting time...heh.

AND I got my Dames a la Mode sparklies in the mail today! I literally tripped up my steps after getting the mail I was so excited, haha. No pics til I wear them with the ballgown I still haven't started, eek. The ball is two weeks from Friday... (Also still owe Taylor a petticoat for those. Um. Sew like the wind!) Well, Robin's got her bonnet safely so at least there's that!
mandie_rw: (pre-raph)
In my defense, I haven't gone on a fabric-buying binge in quite a while (in costume lengths, that is. 2 and 3 yard pieces for modern dresses don't count!), so I don't feel too bad. I am, however, banned from buying any more for the rest of the year! (Although I will make an exception right now for my 10th high school reunion in November, because I need to look hot for that and that may well warrant a new cocktail dress.)

[livejournal.com profile] bauhausfrau happened to post this morning that FabricMart was having a sale, is what I'm saying... (actually, they still are, and there are still currently 3 or 4 nice taffetas in the $12-13/yd range! They should go to good homes!) Between the yellow faille...and the rainbow trout voile, and the striped taffeta that somehow ended up in my shopping cart at the same time as the voile...and the lime green taffeta that I bought today along with a couple yards of hot pink/orange shot to trim it and make some truly horrible 1860s or 70s Thing...

ALL THE SILK!

I should probably get around to sprucing up those few costume pieces I've been meaning to repair, etc. so I can put them up in my shop, huh. (Yes, yes I should.)

Aaaanyway, I mostly did some cleanup in my etsy shop today, since I've been neglecting it the last couple months. Got the new wooden fans listed, and finally came to terms that no matter what I do with this yellow 18thc hat I'm going to hate it, so just finish it and freaking list it already! To that end, sewed a couple feathers on it, and just need to stick a stupid little bow on it, and then I can list that too.
mandie_rw: (regency)
Still nice weather today (the 90-degree weather is coming!!), so I sat on our front lawn, under the giant sycamore, and sewed this afternoon. I really should have been doing this all along when the weather allows; not least because it keeps me off the computer and all the things that distract me on the internet!

Started attaching the skirt to the bodice; the flat front's done, and one half of the back is gathered and mostly sewn on.

And I bought a bunch of trims at work today, for stashing. Well, clearance was half off, what can I say? Red marabou, brown marabou, black and white striped cording, and some flat gold braid that might not be too cheesy to use (at the J? shocking I know)...it was 40 cents a yard so if I decide it's awful, not much money wasted! And I was quite good; the only clearance fabric I bought was two bolts of cheap ugly prints for mockup fabric. (I can't even bring myself to buy the cheap Joann muslin on sale at this point; it's so, so awful!)
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
Things accomplished today: Room booked at Gettysburg for Remembrance Day weekend in November! Well, technically two miles southeast of Gettysburg. Whatever. That's what I get for waiting so long, I know! Me and [livejournal.com profile] dragoneyes19 are gonna have a party!

And by "party" I mean place to crash around 9pm on the Saturday after walking around all day.

Oh, and please discourage me from buying fabric! There's some that has really caught my eye, and I need help resisting.

And by "discourage" I mean "tell me I'm never going to find that fabric again and I should jump on it RIGHT NOW."

Too late. BOUGHT IT. So there will be a new dress for the 2013 Francaise Dinner after all (the Not-Plaid dress is still waiting for the perfect fabric)! If it's as nice as it looks in the picture, it's so worth the price. Hooray impulse buy!

Black lace

Jul. 9th, 2012 10:09 pm
mandie_rw: (absinthe)
So...I went to my local fabric store in search of lace to use on the neckline of the chemise gown.

No luck, but I somehow ended up with lace anyway. A LOT of lace. Unnecessary amounts of lace. Lace totally unrelated to chemise gowns in general. 5 1/2" wide black lace, about 80 yards of it. Or so the guy at the counter told me, and I see no reason to disbelieve him (nobody actually measured it, he just guessed at how much he'd sold of the roll. One of those places, and I love it).

It was just calling out to be used on a bustle gown. All black, of silk and cotton velvet (because I have them) - see, I knew that black jewelry presented itself for a reason!

Anyway, I would not be averse to selling some of it off - I do plan to use it pretty liberally on this newly-planned bustle gown, but I don't think I need 80 yards of it! If anybody's interested, let me know! It's poly, but a decent poly, with a medium-stiff hand. $1.25/yd.

And even if nobody's interested, that's fine, I'm still showing it off, because I'm always pleased when I find good lace that doesn't have those wretched enormous cabbage roses on it!!

mandie_rw: (sew all the things!)
Again. I was in Jo-ann's, just wandering around -- I went in for a spool of thread. Well, I did get that...

And a bunch of things that appealed to my inner magpie in the red tag section: "OOO SHIIINY!" It was bad, especially as I was on an "I can use that for this pattern I just ordered! I can never have too many vintage-style dresses!"

Actually, the first thing that completely derailed the I WILL BE GOOD train was this fleece...

New blankie for my bed? Don't mind if I do! I think I saw it and actually made an excited high-pitched squeaky sound out loud. Hey, I can always use another blanket in this damn cold house.

Proudly showed it off to my family, and my mom made this face..."I liked your old blanket better." Oh my GAWD, mom, I madly love the Beatles, GET OVER IT, 's'not gonna change!

The other damages, for the record, were some red/gold/black brocade, grey linen blend, green linen blend (BRIGHT), teal linen (also very BRIGHT), and black not-too-cheap-and-polyester-ey taffeta. (That's going to be a new dress for work, from one of the VV patterns I ordered. I am sick to death of all my black clothes!)
mandie_rw: (graceslick2)
Well, I did say there would be "LOOK WHAT I BOUGHT!!" posts...

Okay, I haven't bought any yet, but Vintage Vogue patterns are on sale for $5.99 on the site (and the clearance ones are $5 - don't know for how long), and, well...temptation. "I still need that one...and that one and that one..." I know it's not as good as Jo-ann's pattern sales, but my local Jo-ann's pattern selection has been getting crappier and crappier. I'm pretty sure they just don't bother to restock some of them, so lots of patterns are just not there or only in size very large, which is not so much helpful for yours truly. :P So...I'm not going to wait around for a Jo-ann's pattern sale!

Mwahahaha.

Fabric

Dec. 26th, 2010 03:56 pm
mandie_rw: (beatleshelp!)
(I did get money for Christmas, what?)

Was poking around Fabric.com, because I haven't done that in a while, and I've got a bit of Christmas money that wants to be spent! (Yes, I decided to spend it. I'M HELPING THE ECONOMY.) Somewhat surprisingly, I didn't find much that grabbed my attention and said BUY ME, but I did notice their tropical weight wool suitings are $3.49/yd. Okay, only the boring and kind of ugly neutral browns are left (I got the last of the taupe), but with a coupon, I got eleven yards of wool for $32, and that's not something I'm complaining about! I'm sure I can find something to do with taupe wool! Hmm, maybe the Poe dress does want to be brown instead of black... *ponders*

(You're welcome.)

Also, snow. I very very much doubt I'm going to be able to get to work tomorrow, if they're even open. I fully anticipate another day off...which would be nice because then maybe I would actually SEW SOMETHING instead of buying more fabric I need like I need a hole in the head!
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (beatlesjohn)
That's it; "helpin teh economee" is officially getting its own tag. God knows I use it enough.

I went to the Guitar Center nearest me on the way home from work (home by way of Barnes & Noble, unfortunately for my bank account), tromped in, and cheerfully asked for "that Fender acoustic that's $99." Much hunting among the guitars and puzzlement ensued among the employees. "Maybe it was a Black Friday special?" one of them, very helpfully suggested. "Maybe," I agreed, mostly because I had started thinking I was the batshit crazy one.

(No, I wasn't. Their website can bugger off, if they're going to make up sales and keep them listed when they AREN'T REAL. Going to the tiny local music shop next time. SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS, harr. Not that that's the employees' fault, they were very nice to the rambling idiot who kept knocking over cardboard boxes and tripping over things.)

Having walked into the store determined to leave with that guitar, though, I left with that guitar! For more than $99, yes. But it is PRETTY and SHINY and I can tell is going to be waaaay easier to play than the crap one (in terms of the action, not me being a shitty player still.)

Ramble on... )
mandie_rw: (graceslick2)
Thanksgiving dinner at our house can be considered a success, I believe. Nothing exploded in the oven, and none of my cousins tried to strangle each other. I didn't do any of the cooking, but I did all the dishes. Twelve people, a lot of dishes. And no, we don't have a dishwasher. Correction: we do. It's the same one that was there when we moved into this house fifteen years ago, and it didn't work then. Doesn't work now, either! My family's pretty much all batshit crazy...but now you know where it comes from! *grin*

Highlights:
~ Cousin S put his elbow in his coffee and managed to get it on half the table and himself.
~ No alcohol, because Aunt S-H is sort of trying to stop being an alcoholic. (I had a gin & tonic after they left.)
~ There was an argument between my stepfather and mother as to whether she had put out too much cream with the coffee, and whether it mattered that we had a sugar bowl that matched the set or not.
~ Cousin M sat on me half the night. (These cousins are all younger than I am, by the way...)
~ Grandma's kind of going deaf, so she kept passing people the wrong dishes. Example: Lil Sis: Pass the gravy? Grandma: Here you go. *hands over the green bean casserole*
~ Our cat bit Cousin A. But he probably deserved it.
~ The word of the night between Mom and Aunt S was "glutenous," because somebody made fun of Aunt S's mashed potatoes and called them glutenous...so every once in a while, one of them would say, "Glutenous!" and make meaningful gestures in the general direction of the potatoes, and both of them would dissolve in giggles.
~ Grandma's apparently not the only one going deaf...as after dinner, they put on The Game (whatever football game was on. I neither knew nor cared) and I SWEAR the neighbors could hear a play-by-play.
~ Grandma kept saying that my boy-cousins need haircuts. It made me giggle. A commercial for the Beatles on iTunes came on, and she said, "I remember when they first came over here...I thought, Well, they need haircuts!" That really made me giggle!

In sewing news, I've finished sewing the cording in the petticoat. Twenty-four rows. Now I just need to put a waistband on...I'd like to finish it by the first of December, but I've only one day off work between now and then, and I'm going spend most of it recovering from a night out with two of my best friends. So...we'll see about that. I'm sure tomorrow, after working eight and a half hours on Black Friday, I'll totally feel like sewing. Or...not.

And That Book [livejournal.com profile] padawansguide has recommended to me (more than once, because I'm a slacker)...bought it. And a couple other ones too. I Like Books. And, um, it's, like, almost Black Friday so they could have been on sale! (They weren't.)
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (mapeach)
Stupid fabric.com, sending me coupons and stuff. All I was going to do was check my email before I went to bed. "Ooo, coupon on clearance stuff! Well, it couldn't hurt to look..."

No, it could. It really could. I definitely just spent a decent chunk of my first paycheck from this job (that I get on Friday) on fabric. As per usual. But I definitely got almost $25 off from that coupon, so there! (That resolution not to buy fabric? We're going to pretend it never happened. I have a job. It's all good.)

White linen (I really do always need that!), a striped ivory linen/cotton blend, and a checked dupioni silk. Depending on if the stupid people at one of the local historical houses ever get back to me, I may be using one or both of them for that. They do "19th century" stuff; whether that means Regency or Civil War or what, I don't know yet (IF THAT LADY WOULD EMAIL ME BACK IT MIGHT HELP). Either way, I don't yet have much of anything 19thc, but I'd be more than happy to make some! Of course.

Where I think I'm going to PUT any of this, I don't know. The Stash Bin is full. Over-full. This is going to call for some serious re-organization...
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (braindrop)
Okay, so like I said I would yesterday, I went to Jo-ann Fabrics today and got the rhinestones and bugle beads. Which are really too freaking expensive, but what could I do? Especially the rhinestones. Eff you, Jo-ann's. Then I decided to just look around, because we're having our bathroom totally redone, and I was tired of hearing the men with sledgehammers.

So...which circle of hell do you get sent to for breaking resolutions not to buy things?

I don't know how many times I've seen the pretty wool in the suiting fabrics section. Many times. Ridiculously priced, though, so I never seriously thought about getting it. Then...today it was 40% off.

Me: 8DD
No, I can't buy that. I made a RESOLUTION.
Which you've already broken a few times.
Still. I do not need it. I have no place to put it.
But it's on sale! It's only $14.99 a yard!
That's still too much. I don't have the money.
Actually, you've just been hired, and have more money in your account than you thought. Remember?
But what will I use it for?
You know you want a lower-class 18thc anglaise.
Yeah, I do...plus that color will look nice with the brown petticoat I already have.
And you wanted a wool gown in case you get in with an historical site in the area.
You're right! *pets wool some more*

I'LL TAKE IT!!

I love how I convinced myself to buy the wool, by having this internal conversation with myself and standing there petting the bolt of wool for five minutes. I must have looked like a lunatic. And then of course the lady at the cutting counter asked what I was making. I didn't feel like making anything up, and told the truth. Another (very nice) lady waiting to helped then said, "It's going to be a very long dress, isn't it?" (I bought four yards.) Me: ...

I couldn't get my camera to take a proper picture of the color; it's not quite that shade, but close enough. I'm absolutely in love with it. *snuggles pretty wool which is already covered in cat hair*

I will make an effort to finish the Halloween costume first, though!!

Heh.

Sep. 21st, 2010 06:23 pm
mandie_rw: (shoes)
So, remember that resolution of mine not to buy more fabric?

I think we all know where this is going.

Well, TECHNICALLY I didn't buy it, so it's okay, right? I just...acquired it. I went out with my aunt for the day in Philly; she's into crafts and things and knows how I have this thing for fabric, so she took me to some fun places she thought I'd like. Which I did -- in reverse order, an amazing jewelry store in Old City, a cool vintage/costume shop in Germantown, and a fabric store, also in Germantown, Gaffney Fabrics.

Really, really impressive selection of Stuff at Gaffney's! If I were predominantly a theatrical costumer, I'd have thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Not to say I didn't have an excellent time there, but the historical costumer in me (which squelches the theatrical, if you couldn't tell) was like, "There's an incredible amount of fabric here...but why is it all polyester?" The bargain basement was full of fabric (and it smelled like the cellar of the built-in-the-1890s house I used to live in. That cellar creeped me the hell out when I was very small, by the way...there were all these weird sections with no lightbulbs in them...anyway!), and besides the cotton quilt fabrics, there was not one single natural fiber down there!

Oh, that's right, except for the one remnant I dug out. I'm good. (Usually the fabric-finding mojo works; occasionally it doesn't, but I'll never stop being proud of myself for digging out that $2/yd dupioni silk at Jo-ann's that one time...) It's 3/4 yd of beige-ish dupioni. Beige sounds like such a terrible color, but it's pretty fabric! No really, I'm not just in fabric-hoarding withdrawal. Maybe. $3. Not bad.

And then we went upstairs to the store proper, and there was even more polyester fabric! There were a few bolts of silk fabric, but it was all that limp stuff, nothing I was interested in; plus there was definitely some abuse of the word "silk." "Linen" was also shamelessly abused; really, quotation marks would have helped those signs out! However, among the eight or ten bolts of "linen," I did find two bolts of actual linen. One in a medium weight natural/oatmeal color, and one in white with brown and black thin woven stripes.

...Got three yards of the oatmeal, and one of the striped. It was $3.99/yd OKAY... If I ever need plainer, working-class stuff for 18thc (which I am thinking of needing, so there), I'll use the plain for an under-petticoat and the striped for an apron or some such. Partly because it's got a couple marks anyway. I was going to pay for it myself, but my aunt's an enabler, so she insisted on paying for it. And, well, I haven't got all that much money, so I wasn't going to argue too much.

So...you know, it's all okay because I didn't buy it. Me, personally. We'll disregard the unfortunate fact that it will NOT fit in my fabric bin, which is crammed as full as it will go. Nor will it fit in the other bin, which is half Crap, half Fabric. Or in the bag of fabric sitting next to my drawers of sewing/crafty supplies. Or under my sewing desk, because that's been taken over by bags of half-finished projects.

PLZ SEND HALP NAO. Ahem. So...I'll have to break my resolution not to sew any more costume pieces at the moment, because I don't have room for them either? If only I wasn't ashamed to sell off some of my old costumes...but they're too crappy.

Hmm, I want dinner. Panzarottis! A strange, apparently local thing that nobody else knows what it is. Well, my friend from the other side of the state thinks it's hilarious that we call water ice, water ice..."It's ITALIAN ICE!" "Whatever, man, it's water ice here." And...now I'm babbling.

Ooops.

mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (braindrop)
See, there's this silk...it's striped...and it's $3.84 a yard...and I had a coupon...and it really wanted to come and live in my stash until it magically turns into a 1780s frock. And, well, who am I to deny striped silk? So, you know, oops.

Also, I did finish the 1960 skirt over the weekend, and I'd really like to wear it and take a picture because it pleases me, if it would stop raining. Silk dupioni + rain = not the best idea. Eventually, I promise.
mandie_rw: (art deco)
I like how fabric.com is good for nearly instant gratification; got my package from them today. Pretties!

The plaid on the left is actually more berry than red, and it's fairly smooth for dupioni. Am very pleased with it, and intend to make an early 1960s-style dress out of it for graduation -- unless the weather forecast is for hot weather for May 14 (because I'm not going to make this dress until after the semester's over -- no time!), then I might make a dress from the cotton voile (center) instead. Plans for that are a 1950-something Vintage Vogue pattern. And the plaid on the right wants to be a 1960 skirt.

We'll see how this all works out! Good use of my money, right? *grin*
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (beatlesjohn)
I don't even know how it happened...I was just looking at fabric.com to see what taffeta was left OUT OF CURIOUSITY (only the brown, if you want to know), and then next thing you know, I'm seeing the page that says my order should ship in 48 hours...My god...I don't even know. It's a problem, really. But I don't have any brown costumes, you know! I think that needs to be remedied!

Heh. Yeah, bad, bad me.
