mandie_rw: bonnet (1860sgburg17)
Happy Friday! I actually have time to post something!

Actually finished Robin's last Sunday night but, details. At least I remembered that I wanted to take pictures at all!

Both of these are tall enough that the velvet ribbon trick may not suffice - combs may be required to cheat gravity. (This is a "not my problem, they're your bonnets now" problem. *grin*) Or maybe Velcro... or a staple gun. I dunno.

[personal profile] hiraimi 's is black shantung, in a nod to "sensible"...at least in color, if not style!

[personal profile] robinsnest 's? Just...generally impractical, LOL! Hey, she asked for it...

(Last included on an actual head for scale, since the styrofoam head is not quite full sized and thus makes the bonnets look even more ridiculous than they really are!

Decided it would be more prudent of me to get [personal profile] miss_philomena  's bonnet frame out of the way, so I started work on that today. Narrowly avoided cutting out pieces for a new bonnet for me at the same time, but sternly told myself I really don't need a summery-colored bonnet when I have a straw hat that's perfectly fine. If anything, I'll want a hat to wear with the Rational Dress I probably won't have time to make for Gettysburg...but not a light pink bonnet!

Speaking of hats, I got one of my two '40s hat options delivered today (um, yes, two); it's a wide-brimmed straw and very cute! Also very faded on top. Some dye and a new ribbon are in order, I think.

New Castle's The Spirit of Christmas was today, and I took a jaunt down with [livejournal.com profile] sewloud and [livejournal.com profile] miss_philomena in 1860s (the historic part of town is mainly 18thc-first half of 19thc buildings, but dammit 1860s is Christmassy! And they advertised it as a Dickens thing, so). I think a good time was had by all, and I'll do a nice writeup later, but my stupid 1830s sleeve cuffs await me. I am massively unimpressed with said sleeves, and am probably going to take them apart and reconstruct them before I wear the dress a second time. But they're not too horrible to wear, so they're going to get a quickie half-arsed hemming for tomorrow. Right now. As soon as I get up.

Anyway, like I said, shall do proper recap later, but I did take the time to write a little blog post on Robin and Adrienne's spoon bonnets, which I'll just link to since I really need to sew those cuffs! I'm pretty chuffed with those bonnets so I thought they deserved their own blog entry. :)

I decided against the IKT today, for several reasons. Partly because I got up and did not feel in the mood for stays, partly because I really did think my time would be better spent sewing, and partly because I'm miffed they never actually responded to my proposal of a millinery demonstration set-up during open houses. Waah waaaah.

(I sat and ate my oatmeal while still wearing my bathrobe, thinking...I should get up and get dressed...now. Or in 5 minutes. Or...maybe I'll make Robin's bonnet and I won't go. I did do a bunch of prep for the open house so that was some wasted time...but it's not like a cut-out black hat is going to expire! I'm bad at adulting, what can I say. In my defense I never confirmed I was going to be there. Answer your damn emails, historic sites!)

So, bonnet! I've been working on [livejournal.com profile] sewloud's spoon bonnet this week in the mornings, but didn't want to get her hopes up in case I wasn't able to finish it. But I'm quite confident I can, so now I'll talk about it! It's purple sateen trimmed mainly in pink-orange shot ribbon, and will have (candy-stripe taffeta) plaid ties.

She gave me leave to make the most horrible bonnet I could, so I took full advantage of that! *evil cackle* It doesn't look that bright in my blurry laptop-camera shot, but oh, it is. The sateen isn't strictly correct in the first place so I gave myself leave to be a little silly with the trim and do something I can't document (have I mentioned several hundred times 1860s isn't really my playground?).

Probably won't quite finish it tonight, as only half a tie is hemmed and it's past midnight, and I still have to stick flowers in it and do a bonnet stay and the head liner. But it's at a Fun Point, and that is motivating!

Unlike that second cream poplin sleeve, which I shall have to do tomorrow afternoon, grumble grumble. I hate you, elbow puffs.
mandie_rw: (regency winter)
Welllll, not on my poplin dress much, til tonight. But I did finish [livejournal.com profile] miss_philomena's spoon bonnet that I promised to make *mumblety*-months ago, so, you know, that's a Thing. Have to wait to see that til it's on her head though. ;) It ended up a little more spring-y than expected, and it's not exactly spring...but flowers are TIMELESS OKAY?

And then tonight I tried on the poplin bodice - it's actually a hair on the roomy side, but not horribly so. Also measured for the skirts, since this is a waistline and petticoat combination I haven't done yet, so didn't want to completely guess. (Corded 1840s petticoat under an 18thc quilted petti, if you were wondering! Either is about the same amount of fluff, so I can wear the velvet and wool one if it's cold, taffeta if it's not.) Then measured, tore, and sewed the skirt panels together; now I'm somewhat-distractedly hemming it.

Too hot to be in the sewing room, so more hand sewing it is, probably through Weds. at least. I suffer for my art but I don't like to suffer that much! :P Finished sewing the spoon bonnet pieces together, cut out the mulling, and am sewing it onto Bonnet No.1 currently.
mandie_rw: (francaise dinner)
Finished cleaning up my patterns (apart from stray pieces that are probably hidden under heaps of fabric and the like. I didn't say I was deep cleaning the sewing room...), which I consider a good day's work in and of itself. So when I also managed to get the buckram pieces for the bonnets cut out and wired, I felt supremely productive!

And I posted this on FB as well, but I found it so amusing I want to note it here, so I can remember it in future..."IMPROBABLE 18THC SEDUCTION ATTEMPT: going up to your hot employer and telling him your dress fastens up the back, so you need help taking it off. (I'm enjoying Poldark, but that made me laugh, a lot.)" I also want to mail the cast a big box of hairpins, but that's not as hilarious as a back-fastening dress being a plot point. Also...she somehow managed to put said back-fastening dress on by herself, which makes it even more ridiculous, even if we're pretending for a moment that back-laced dresses are acceptable. OH, TV.

Home in one piece! And my things are unpacked from my car...and left all over the floor immediately inside the side door where I dropped them. Unpacking and cleaning up tonight seems to be a lot to ask.

We neglected to get a picture of all our group on Saturday, but here's one of us at the ball Friday night, from Kat:

Remembrance day weekend! )

"I probably won't be posting much..." Or, maybe I will. Gotta report every little inch of progress, right?

Bonnets - Alice's bonnet is finished, woop woop! And I'm rather pleased with it, I must say.

Bonnet! )

And the World's Ugliest Nightgown, because I guess that's something I want to show off? (Hey, it's another FINISHED thing, so, yes!)

Bonus points for making it too short, too. I think I'll put a piece in it for next time around but not now. Don't care enough!
mandie_rw: (duh)
....which is both the reason for my lack of posting in the past few days (why does everything TAKE SO LONG to make?!) and the reason I'll have a much-less-impressive wardrobe for Gettysburg than hoped! Have decided to prioritize finishing the odds and ends on the pieces I already have, rather than attempting to make some more half-finished things.

Also, I'm glad I tried on the Dress of a Thousand Triangles today, because I'm going to have to put a placket in, which is, uh, putting it generously. To say "it almost doesn't fit any more" would be sadder yet more appropriate. Thank goodness I decided to have it lace shut rather than use hooks and eyes. Well, it has been a year and a half since I last wore it... If this trend continues, I may need to make a new ballgown for Remembrance Day weekend 2014!

Alice's bonnet is this close to done, I just need to put flowers and crap on it. I was going to bang out all the machine sewing on Robin's bonnet tonight, but have apparently hidden the wire from myself really well. I JUST used it, where the hell has it wandered off to?? So, gotta buy more wire after my shift at work tomorrow. (...floral wire. I've never bought real millinery wire in my life.)

So, don't expect too many posts in the next week, since not much fun sewing will be happening!

This morning I went to see 12 Years A Slave, because I really wanted to see it, and was tired of waiting around for somebody to accompany me! (Big girl, can see movies by self, right.) And it's an excellent movie - hard to watch at times, but considering the subject matter...that's not exactly a surprise.Cut for delicate sensibilities...or those who aren't interested in my Opinions On Movies! )

Anyhow, while it's so good, it's a little distracting...somehow the whole thing kept invading my thoughts all day, which made it really hard to focus on the World's Frumpiest Nightgown! I love thought-provoking films, but they aren't especially helpful when I'm trying to marathon-sew!

Since today was supposed to be paletot-sewing day, it's officially been bumped down to the bottom of the queue. I know I've already put quite a good amount of work into it, but I don't need it as much as I need, well, pretty much everything else. I have multiple shawls, and if it's as cold as it's been the last couple days, I have my 1840s mantle, duh. I didn't actually think of that til yesterday. It would be rather unfashionable for 1863 (because somehow it's got in my head since that's the year we're commemorating...all clothing must act accordingly), but I like it, and have only worn it once, so that's okay. My bonnet's a tad outdated too, if it comes down to it.

ANYWAY. Today, despite distractions, I finished off the World's Frumpiest Nightgown apart from two buttons and buttonholes, which I just could not bring myself to do. Slacking slacker. And now I'm binding Alice's bonnet, which really doesn't appreciate the effort.

So, what have I been up to? Finally completed enough little things in the past couple days to post about them, and somehow I'm not too far behind in my ambitious schedule to Finish ALL the Gettysburg Things.

First - a bumpad, which I've needed since I first got my hoop! I find my hoop tends to push forward a bit under the weight of skirts and petticoats, so some kind of little pad was in order. It's way exciting. This is version 2, by the way - when your method is cut, sew, stuff, you rarely get things thr right size on the first try! Number 1 was too small.

Next - I finally trimmed my own bonnet! I only made it two years ago! ...Yeah, really. It's a bit simply trimmed, I think - I was wavering about putting some flowers on the outside as well, but I'm not very into the frou-frou, so I'll leave it for now.

And the progress on Alice's bonnet!
Cut in case she doesn't want to see her bonnet before it's done... )
mandie_rw: (1860sgburg)
I had all great plans to Sew All The Things today on my day off, and instead spent the vast majority of the day curled up on the couch, feeling like total crap. Oh well. The best-laid plans, right?

I did work on Alice's bonnet though, and right now it's almost completely be-flannelled. Covered in flannel. (Whatever, spell-check.) Then I get to play with the real fabric!
mandie_rw: (1860sgburg)
That's what it had BETTER be for the next three weeks; I haven't got the time to be wandering off into anything else!

Yesterday I did manage to tack down the facing (or tack up, really), pin the third stripe on, and cut out the buckram pieces for a bonnet. Bonnet? Yes. [livejournal.com profile] hiraimi, [livejournal.com profile] dragoneyes19, and I are doing an exchange of skills. I'm making 1860s bonnets for both of them for Gettysburg, and Robin's knitting me an 1860s sontag, while Alice makes me a fancypants Regency reticule (not for Gettysburg!).

What do you think the odds are that I still don't actually trim my own bonnet...

And back to the paletot; tonight I sewed on the third stripe, and am currently working on the fourth, which I am determined to finish before I go to bed!
