mandie_rw: (chintz dress spring)
Wrote up a party post AND a dress post for the chintz dress last night, and promptly forgot to link them here. Ooops! In summary, got car back, went to lunch with a friend, and managed to get all did up for a park photoshoot! Had some extremely interested teenagers staring at me from about 25 feet away for the last 20 minutes or so...they didn't bug me so I cheerfully carried on as if they weren't there. xD

Obviously I had an amazing time, as the White House is pretty much incapable of throwing a lackluster party! And all attendees really brought their A-game, too; every single person looked smashing, in my opinion. Well done, ladies!

(You know this is the kind of party that ten years ago I'd have been reading about online, and wishing I was cool enough to know all these cool people and their cool parties! Koshka-the-cat, Jenny laFleur...I still kind of think I was invited accidentally as I'm not actually cool, but shhh, nobody blow my cover. ;) )

I mean, LOOK AT THIS AWESOMENESS.

Can't afford to get complacent with my sewing, as there's stuff coming up quick...but I'm taking a couple days off to read books, and plot. Plotting is always fun.

Or, The Only Problem With Pink Hair Powder:
inside of bodice stained pink
Heh.

Hopefully I can manage an event post tomorrow, and a blogger post some time this week. I didn't get pics of the gown skirts down, so I'll try and get a shoot of the dress sometime this week, and hopefully catch some of the blooming trees as I think they'll make for a pretty background! No hair powder this time though.

I'm actually doing pretty well, though I think it'll be another late night. Then I can pack in the morning before my mid-shift at work, and then it's down to VA with Adrienne! We plan to have an epic Disney/showtunes sing-a-long. xD We'll see if I'm 100% trimmed by then!

Last night I discovered that the tucker I made for the neckline is about 3" too short. Apparently an epic mismeasurement. Ooops? Oh well, tuckers aren't entirely necessary! Good thing.

So I am looking at a very late night, as I got a bee in my bonnet today to get that damn twisted trim on the dress, come hell or high water! (o, hi, motivation. Where were you last week when I wanted you??) I still have tomorrow-minus-work for sewing, so I think I can get it done. We'll find out!

I'd promised my best-friend-from-high-school that I'd see Beauty and the Beast with her this week, so now we're up to twice. Somewhat surprisingly I think I actually enjoyed it more the second time. Probably because none of the WTF choices were unpleasant surprises on this viewing! I still hate the yellow dress and ear wire with the fire of a thousand suns, though.

And I dithered over whether to accept the new LJ user agreement. I read it, and it's shady. Not that I think it'll really affect me or my use of LJ (I know there's no such thing as privacy online anyway!),  but am I really interested in supporting a platform that's so able to crack down on political dissidents in their home country? I guess so...for now. I'm really going to make more of an effort to interact more here (DW) rather than LJ from now on.

I am blissfully unconcerned about nothing really being finished! It's all quite finished enough to wear, and I guess I must be fine with that! Especially as I spent my free time today puttering about in the garden (I think my new tiny tree is currently being flattened by the rain, oops) and scheming for a new, totally random project that I don't even sort of need. Ordered linen swatches though! Yes, it's a secret for now. ;) Mostly as I haven't decided whether I should try and squeeze it in this year or not. But I'm sure by next year I'll have lost all motivation for it, so, hmmm.

Things that are done: gauze trim on the petticoat, gauze trim on the gown's sleeve cuffs and neckline, and hemming of the crown of the cap and half the band. Not done: gauze trim on the gown skirt, twisted silk trim on top of all the gauze trim, the rest of the cap, the bows on the gown, tacking in the tucker and sleeve ruffles, and the mitts I was going to make. Ah well! If I get the gauze trim on the gown skirt, tack in the tucker/ruffles, and tack on the bows I'll look quite put together enough!

Also, a Very Important Question: should I bring the blue or the pink hair powder?? (I wasn't going to use the colors for risk of staining the cap and/or hat, but...oh, well, let's live dangerously. Especially as I shan't have a cap, haha!

mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
Orrrrrrr maybe not. A little bit? I may stay up late and try and get as near to my daily goal as I can though.

I went to see Beauty and the Beast this afternoon, and I had all good intentions of coming home and sewing after that...but then I had FEELINGS that had to be expressed, which meant two hours of outraged online chatting with friends instead of sewing! Heh.

I actually liked it a lot more, overall, than I thought I was going to. Probably helped that I didn't have very high expectations, but hey. The additional songs/plot points didn't make me want to pull my hair out, and while I think they would have done better to follow the animated movie less slavishly, that actually didn't bother me too much either. Yes, there were silly plot holes, but whatever, it's a fairy-tale, I'm pretty forgiving there.

And the sets and costumes as a whole were just lovely!  I can't lie, I'll probably grab the DVD just so I can rewatch the opening party scene (ALL the saques! glorious) and the ones with the villagers (indienne prints everywhere! silly caps! silly hair!); I thought the costumes were a really good mix of historically-inspired while still being fantastic. And the Prince got some lovely 18thc suits when he was human. So, really, there was a lot more that I liked than I didn't...but what I didn't like I felt very strongly about! And I need to complain about it online, so.
I HAVE SO MANY CAPSY OPINIONS )
I think that is all my feels! Now, let me go listen to the original soundtrack. ;)

Also, I can't lie, I want to do an historical version of the yellow dress now, haha! I've always loved the idea of Disney princess adapted to be historically accurate, though I know it's hardly an original idea at this point! Someday...

Trim is boring boring boring! I mean, it's very nice when it's sewn on, but the actual sewing-it-on is verrrrry tedious. Petticoat flounce is on - I did that first as it's the longest and therefore the boring-est strip to gather up. Have the neckline and sleeve cuff trim strips cut. This afternoon I decided to do some cap-pattern-tweaking, just to get away from the endless gathering! Got the cap patterned out (nothing very complicated, just a slight adaptation of my middling-class voile cap pattern) and cut the organza for it. I have sincere doubts I'll have time to finish it, but I didn't want to run any more gathering stitches at the moment.
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
To do all the little finishings on the chintz gown that somehow manage to take hours and hours! Hem, a quick-and-dirty ugly tuck to fix the gappy neckline, remembering that I wanted to put boning in the bodice seams, loops for hoiking up the skirt...etc. etc.

But now it's ready to trim! *waves very tiny celebration flag* I'll still be in good shape if I can get that done this week, and still have a week to make the cap. And with that silly hat I can forego a cap if need be, though I'd rather have one than not.

Took pics while it was still light out, so all the aforementioned things aren't quite done to it as of these pics. Close enough to get the idea, though.

Finished the petticoat hem tonight finally - too lazy to put it all on tonight so maybe I'll do that tomorrow to mark the gown hem. Or maybe not. ;)

Today I got my white striped organza in the mail, yay! Except it's definitely ivory, not white. It's even a bit darker than it shows in the photo. Oops! Ahh, PureSilks, you never fail. :P
flower printed fabric and striped fabric
To be fair, it's still pretty, and if I didn't have such a white dress I would probably try to pass it off as a "natural white" without much compunction! It's too obviously not-white when in proximity to the chintz print, though. I want a white cap! I never did settle on whether to buy the gold striped organza for my hat or not, so I'm quite happy to use this on the hat instead, and I'll just buy some solid organza from one of the sellers I know who will not be so free with their color names, ahem. So maybe I'll be more inspired to hat-trim tomorrow. We'll see!
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
I guess I feel like I'm just about done (despite, hello, still having to trim the thing) so I'm slowing down a bit. Yesterday I pleated the petticoat, and today I sewed on the ties and pinned up the hem. Usually I do the hem before leveling the petticoat but I wanted to make sure it was short enough first. You know I love me a cute little 1770s petticoat! ;)

If the striped organza for the cap isn't in tomorrow or Saturday's mail I'm going to just buy some plain stuff (which will naturally ensure that it shows up Monday, but oh well)...all those stupid little hems take me a while and I still have to allow shipping time for the replacement.
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
Just the hem to go, though! Which I won't mark until I make the petticoat, just in case it adds more fluff than anticipated or something.

Despite having a snow day from work, going to the Philly flower show (Holland theme this year; SO many tulips! fabulous) instead...because they closed the store as the roads were bad but we can easily walk to the train station from home, no cars needed...and then doing a fair amount of shoveling, I did make a bit of time for sewing! Sewed on the shoulder pieces of chintz, and did the neckline. It's a very low neckline...

Tomorrow I can probably knock out a good chunk of petticoat sewing; get it pleated, at least. We'll see.
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
Well, I got the skirt lengthened and the sleeves made up and halfway sewn on...but I need to check the fit before I sew the top half down, and while I don't need to put stays on for that, I do need to be able to fit my arms through the armholes, which I can't do with this big fat wool sweater on! And right now I refuse to do that. So...that'll get done tomorrow.

I started sewing the back panel for the petticoat instead; I managed to cut the front of the petti out of one piece, but that meant the back needed a bit of piecing to make sure there's enough width in the skirt. No problem, all running stitches, very easy! I'll probably get that back panel all done before bed tonight.
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
You will, I am sure, pardon the sweatpants, fuzzy socks, and cropping of my head. It was not a good day to have my face on camera, LOL. Actually put it on over the intended under-petti this time - taffeta instead of linen. Makes a difference!
18th century dress in progress without sleeves
Today I stitched down the lining edges as far as I could without having yet done the shoulders/sleeves yet...I wanted to double check the fit before messing with sleeves. Getting there! I did decide that I want to add about 4" to the skirt, though. When I tried it on with shoes (it's in flat feet/fuzzy socks here) it's at that awkward is-your-skirt-slightly-too-long-or-did-you-mean-to-have-a-sweep? length, and I'd rather commit to a sweep, since this isn't a remotely practical outfit! I'll probably wear the skirt looped up most of the time, but I'd like to have the option.
18th century dress in progress back view
This will, of course, mean a slightly awkward pieced-in strip of fabric at the bottom, with the print going crossways, as I only have long strips left with the print going vertically! Whatever, it won't be very noticeable, and that's so 18th-century. *is unfazed*

I have, however, changed my mind a bit about trim. I really want a flounce of some sort on the petticoat, and with self-trim that's not an option (unless we're talking a flounce that's 1" wide, which, no, we're not). Gauze trimming, however, is incredibly popular in the 70s, if you ask the fashion plates, and I have about 4 yards of Dharma organza left in the stash - the stuff that's perfectly fine on the straight, but I flat out refuse to try hand-rolling curves on it anymore. Goes all widgey and isn't worth the trouble! Ugh. (It seems to behave itself pretty well when ripped cross-ways, so I'm going to live dangerously and rip all my trim rather than hemming, because I don't have time to hem a million miles of organza.) I did at first question if gauze was too fancy a trim for a cotton print, but I did find a 1778 Galerie des Modes plate of a gauze-trimmed polonaise of indienne, so I'm calling it good enough. Plus, that's me thinking of cotton prints in 21st century-terms ("that's a bedsheet") rather than 18thc (expensive imported fabric)! Quite fancy enough for gauze, I think.

mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
I have not had a particularly large amount of fun sewing the skirt to the bodice. The fabric's very tightly woven cotton (unsurprising as it's basically a sheet), and going through a bunch of multiple folds has kind of sucked! Many thumb-stabbings, cursing, etc. And I've bent the shit out of this needle! But the skirt is now attached, yay.

I was off today but that's all the sewing I did, as I had boring paperworky things to do, like taxes. I think I can get basic dress construction done by the end of the day Sunday, though. That's my next day off and I don't think I have any other commitments besides sew!
mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
Yesterday I did a first fitting on the bodice. Not bad - I had to trim down the back of the armscye about an inch for whatever reason, trim up the curve of the front point (expected, as I drew it in longer randomly), and fit the shoulders, but all little fixes.
bodice front
Before I did the little trimmin's, but not bad!
bodice back
Again pre-trim - there are some slight wrinklies on the back that annoy me, but they might get less terrible when I bone the back seams.

And then today I did the little fixes, and started pleating up the skirt. Woo! Always feels more like a dress when it's got a skirt. ;)

mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
- Finished covering the straw hat. I also dug out a very little bit of sky-blue taffeta from the silk-scrap-bag to use for hat trimming; I decided that since the ratio of colored taffeta vs fluffy organza trim on the hat will be rather low, it's silly to spend for a full yard if I've got something that will work. I don't like it quite as much as my to-purchase options, but it'll do. I also ordered a yard of white striped organza last night for the cap. It's coming from India so if it isn't here by a certain date, I'll have to order some plain organza. But I can wait a bit on that, since all my options for nice organza are US-based and ship quickly!

- Sewed half a seam on the chintz bodice.

- Threw a fit over the printer choosing a very inopportune moment to stop working, as they always do. Printers are total assholes.

mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
I put on my stays (small victories) today and got the mockup fitted; I futzed with the seamlines of my 1770s base pattern to get that little flare-in-and-out on the center back pieces, so I wanted to make sure nothing funny had happened. Took a little bit out of the side back seam so a mockup wasn't a complete waste of time!

And I cut the mockup from my lining linen, because I'm smart like that. ;)

So I got the bodice pieces all cut out and pinned together...I didn't try to line up the patterns at all, partly as it's a very wind-y, vine-y design, partly because they wouldn't have bothered in period, and partly because I'm cutting the bodice and sleeves from pillowcases, so as to leave the rest of the fabric for gown skirt and petticoat! So I'm being very stingy with fabric. I do in fact have enough for said petticoat, as last time I posted I'd forgotten that it's a king-sized set. Juuuuust enough! The giant pillowcases help, LOL. I'll basically be working with scraps for trim, but if I can squeak out enough to go round the neck and sleeve cuffs I'll be perfectly happy.
cut pieces of 18th century bodice laid out on floor
I narrowly managed to avoid placing a flower right over a boob, which is something I generally try to avoid. I meant to add a tuck in the chintz to make it look like there was another seam on the side-back piece...but I forgot while merrily cutting away, so it is what it is!

mandie_rw: me 1950s green dress (Default)
Today I was still too lazy to put on my stays to fit the mockup for the chintz gown! In my defense, I was in and out of the house all day, so undressing, dressing, undressing, and dressing again seemed like a lot of work.

So I did a lot of online browsing, to decide what I'm going to buy for my hat and cap. I decided to use some ivory moire not-silk from the stash (it's mostly cotton, and a blend of something I don't remember...from lighting it on fire I suspect rayon and a little poly) to cover the hat, so I'm shopping for taffeta for trim and organza for the cap/more hat trim. I'm very fond of using good-quality silk taffeta for hat trim, as I can just rip it across grain, pull some strings off, and boom, trim. Plus if it's a shot silk you get a very fun effect by pulling more weft threads out and letting the "fringe" of the warps show!

Oh, and I did start recovering my hat. :D It's an old straw base, that I remade from a cheap braid hat. Its merits include being 1/4" wider on one side than the other, being entirely covered in thread balls from the original stitching that I hadn't pulled off...and I had covered it in polyester shantung, shiny side up. It's a very old hat...and no, you don't get a picture of it in its original state! I'd kept it because hey, it's horrible, but I can always recover it! So. Tonight I ripped off the shantung, despaired over the unevenness of the brim (whatever, nobody will notice when it's covered in crap), hand-sewed wire to the brim, mulled just the top of the crown as that was mainly where the braid showed through on the polyester wonder version, covered the crown, and half-covered the brim. So...Not Bad.

The current fabric debate is between a light blue and a light green for trimming (happen to have swatches of both), whether to use striped silk organza for the cap (not especially common but not rare, according to my very scientific study of the pinterest boards of People Who Know Better), and if I use it for the cap can I also use it on the hat, and if either or both of those are striped should it be gold striped or white striped. DECISIONS!

Yes, I seem to be going very pastoral with this outfit...
