If you're tired of seeing all the beautiful, well-fitted, and glamourous costumes on the people at Costume College, look no further! I have a refreshing change from all those pretty things for you! ;)

Actually, I had a really good time yesterday; I reported at 10am, ate candy for 45 minutes, and then was stationed at admissions til 1.30. And then I got to go play with a small group of friends that were attending as guests. A really strenuous day, let me tell you, haha. It was an easy 90 degrees, but so much less humid than it's been lately that it didn't feel that hot, especially in the shade. In the direct sun it did get a little toasty. I was at the front table at admissions, and we kept moving the table back...and back...and back...as the sun moved. By 1.30 we were right up against the carriage house! Which smelled very strongly like an old basement.

This was the first Jazz Age on the Delaware, and I thought it went pretty smoothly, as these things go. I didn't hear about any major casualties, anyway! And personally, I thought it was a lot nicer than the Jazz Age Lawn Party that we went to in NYC a few years ago. The only better thing about that one was that you didn't have to purchase a ticket, could just sit outside the "pen" and picnic if you wanted. At this one you had to pay the $45 to get onto the grounds at all. But it's a much nicer location, I think - right on the river, with a mansion for a pretty background, a lot more space to spread out, more trees, lawn games, and you could actually hear the music! The only other negative was if you weren't a gin person, because Hendricks was a sponsor and there wasn't much else. I am a gin person though, so if I'd been purchasing I'd have been happy!

And I think the crowd looked better, overall. Not that there weren't any fringey-out-of-a-bag flapper Halloween costumes, but at least the vast majority of them were butt-covering! We saw waaaaaay too many butts at the JALP in NY! And most people at least made an effort - women in floaty sundresses, men in a hat and bowtie, that sort of thing. The evil costume snark in me was actually quite disappointed yesterday! I actually didn't see any "OH HONEY NOs"...so sad. ;)

Right, the dress.

This dress is ugly. I mean, it's fine, I didn't make any major boo-boos on it (though I still need to hem it. THERE IS STILL TIME) and it looks just like a practical and plain early 1920s dress. But lord, it's ugly. I know plenty of you make and wear lots of charming 20s things that do indeed look adorable on you, so don't take it personally!

Begs the question as to why I voluntarily made another 1920s dress, I know. Experimental archaeology? I will report back on how it all handles tomorrow, and will let you know if I die from heatstroke. Or, you know, not. ;)

Lordy, we went out for a late dinner and I am SO FULL. I was going to try and get the top of the maid dress sewn today, as I pried myself away from the Law & Order marathon on the tv this afternoon, and got the bodice mocked up - it looks disturbingly like a Fugly Bedgown in mockup form. But I am full of burger and cider, and still have to cut out the pieces in the wool. And that sounds like too much work right at this moment. *hic*

Apron done! And I got my dress fabric in the mail today, and it's quite a nice wool for what I paid! Very pleased. It's a dark navy that almost reads as black...except, of course, when I put it next to my black shoes, stockings, and the velvet ribbon in my cap! Oh well...shut up. ;) I still think navy might be a legit color for a domestic's dress. Or...we're in America, baby, the rules don't apply here!

...or something. Anyway.

I fully intend to whine about the hot sewing room every day I'm in it this week. Because it's damn hot! And I got to choose between a slightly hotter, close room with a shut window, or an open one with a tiny, heavily garbage-scented breeze. Lovely.

Apron's made from a cotton muslin remnant (the nice muslin at Joann's, mind you, not the terminally off-grain stuff) that I will definitely need to starch. Oooh, adventures in starching, that'll be fun. I think putting it on Mabel over my stays adds a nice touch...but I hate lacing her back into them, so I won't take them off once they're on unless I really need to!

The lace is a little cheesier than I'd usually go for, as it's one of those polyester on-a-spool numbers, but for something I intend to wear once, I didn't want to waste any of my nice lace! It looks fine from a couple feet away, I think.

Did sew today! I suffered through the 95-degree sewing room, even. Briefly. A silly cap-headband thing doesn't take much sewing, happily.

So! I worked on a very dodgy cap-headband thing for my '20s maid outfit today, out of my very stiff striped cotton organdy. I had to baste all those tiny horrible pleats in place, and my fingers very much resent me right now! I originally planned to make this cap all by hand, but unless I want to be working on this cap for two more weeks...yeah, it's getting machined.

Yaaaaaaawn. I'm so boring this week! Maybe it's a reaction to everyone else's slightly frenzied Costume College posts..."nope, no looming deadlines here!" *stretches lazily*

I worked on the "dress the color of a winter sunset" a bit today; the back's sewn together and I'm in the process of sewing the skirt to the back bodice. By hand, which sort of sucks, because this fabric drags a lot on the needle and gives off all these wispy fraying bits. Lovely.

Have also been sloooooowly working on the spoon bonnets - the one's covered in flannel completely, and the other just needs the brim done.

And just today I remembered that I'm volunteering at Glen Foerd on August 1st for their 1920s Lawn Party, and that I wanted something more practical to work in than my green lawn dress! (Really I need a dress with a pocket, as I don't want to have to leave a purse somewhere with all those people around!) August 1st is...soon. Oooops. Good thing that'll be mainly machine sewn. Should probably order fabric for that...like...now, as I don't have any lightweight wool in a domestic sort of color.
