mandie_rw: 3 victorian ladies at the shore (seaside)
Today:
Finished sewing boob-holders to corset, which means corset is DONE.

Took a couple of extra-lazy-style tucks in the waistband of the petticoat to make it fit ,and put on a hook & eye. And darned one hole, and gave the whole thing a slapdash iron. Still deciding if I want to take out the tuck that's just above the flounce...it's VERY clearly a "shit this needs to be shorter and a tuck is easier than dicking around with a new waistband " kind of tuck, as it's on the inside, and slightly uneven. (I also discovered that the original maker ran out of narrow lace at the hem with about 3" to go...and she just filled the gap with a different lace that's the same size but obviously different! Lady who made this 120 years ago... I feel you. Let's be friends. ) The length is just a wee bit shorter than is ideal and taking out the tuck would fix that. But...it looks original! But I'm already bastardizing  this petticoat anyway. So...hmm.

Corset cover: done. I highly recommend letting the elves do all th he insertion and tucks for you.  Even if they're elves that insist on using an overlock machine...

And I wore it all around today while working on the various bits; wore the corset for about four hours and nothing exploded, so that's good. There are are a couple stress points in the net that I noticed after the first try on, so I don't know about long term wear...but I am quite sure it will survive at least one afternoon!

Maybe a pic or two tomorrow! Typing on my phone now, which is absurdly annoying,  so no pics atm.
mandie_rw: me in late victorian dress holding book (natformbeige)
I was up early today, so luxuriated in a very long time of pretending I was going to make ALL THE THINGS today (a basic turn of the century summer outfit for a local Spanish-American War event in a couple weeks! finish one of the several cut out vintage dresses that are hanging around the sewing room!)! Fun, but I finally decided to be somewhat sensible and start on stuff for the August Great War event.

I accidentally came across a Butterick costume hat pattern that has a wide-brimmed late teens/early 20s hat as one of the views (well I'll be damned; not entirely sure if they did that on purpose, and the sample is fuggles, but the pattern pieces are solid) while I was looking up how much fabric a theoretical late 1890s shirtwaist would take! So that was something useful. Cut it out, squinted at it, and decided I want the brim wider, but other than that it's totally usable. (And then all three hats I make won't be straw. Which is probably a good thing, because I get bored easily.)

Also traced off and cut out the Wearing History 1917 combinations and corset cover patterns, cut the combies, and pretty much got them all sewn together. Just have to go fishing in the lace stash to see if I have anything that will work for them and the corset cover, and ran out of time to do that before work. I'll buy lace if need be, but if not, that's even better! The combinations amuse me; all combinations are fairly stupid looking but these are funnier than average IMO. It's probably the crotch flap...

Practicum II starts this week, but since I finished my last paper today and only have one final on Weds (and it's not one that can really be studied for), and already started my work availability of "I have basically no availability for two and a half weeks"...I get to sew for a bit! I got my Wearing History patterns in the mail today and am tempted to cut them out...but I'm going to be good and not do that til after the picnic.

So today, in between bouts of very grudgingly writing that last psych paper, I finished hemming the robe, made the facing, and sewed that on. Progress! I could and probably should sew a little more tonight, but I feel super accomplished so I probably won't, LOL.
