Why fabric stores+ me = byebye paycheck
Aug. 11th, 2008 05:51 pmJo-ann fabrics and I really have something of a love-hate relationship...but today I decided I liked it and wanted to spend money at it. Well, I wanted to make a regular dress (I can never have too many dresses), and I needed to get some more stuff for the Tudor. Got most of it (yay! 40% off coupon= $9 spent on fur for sleeve turnbacks), except black velveteen. I was really hoping that their velveteen would match mine, as I haven't got enough for the sleeves, but no go. The stuff I have is blue-based, theirs is red. Damn. But other than that, I think I got most of the stuff I'll need for the Tudor.
The unnecessary stuff...well, I saw remnants of striped silk and couldn't resist, even though they were still overpriced, and it's less than 2 yards total.
green and white dress fabric. Maybe I'll actually make it soon instead of shoving it in the Stash like I always end up doing...
I couldn't help it...Really, no self-control whatsoever.
Nothing else was exciting enough to scan...and I figured attempting to scan fur was kind of a weird idea anyway... "What are you doing?" "Oh, I'm scanning my fake fur." "..."

Date: 2008-08-12 04:47 pm (UTC)Oooo the silk is very pretty. I wonder if they have any of it at the local stores since it would look lovely as lining for my velvet jacket.
Anyways, quick question: Are you contemplating making another Bastille day dress? Or are you going to wait another year? I'm thinking of buying the Reconstucting History Baroque pattern (since there is no way I'm gonna try drafting that thing myself) to make a BD gown.Yea yea, way before the Revolution, but I'd rather have that style. :) Any thoughts?

Date: 2008-08-14 12:52 am (UTC)I'm thinking about making a new dress for next year's Bastille Day (after all, what is good is life if I'm not making costumes I don't really need?), as lord knows I've got enough fabric for, no lie, for or five various 18thc things. (*Why* I let myself buy fabric is beyond me!) Not really sure which one I might make...my head is way too full of Tudor right now! (And yeah, I prefer the not-actually-from-the-Revolution styles myself...my BD dress was mid1780s at the latest, I think!)
I've never used a Reconstructing History pattern, but I think they look good, so if you want to use a pattern, go for it! I actually used one of the drawings of stays on the La Couturiere Parisienne (marquise.de) website to make my stays- lots of scaling up and futzing around, but it eventually worked and was free! Excellent source anyway, though. Portraits and stuff.
I *think* that's all my thoughts (oh, that's *it*? hah. hah.) for now...let me know when you decide anything on the pattern/fabric/etc! Me luvs 18thc lots!
