Plans and things

I ought to be writing a paper on the Aechemenid empire right now. Like, really ought, as in, it's due tomorrow. But I decided to treat myself to a last LJ hurrah before writing said paper, mostly because I'm lazy and hate the Aechemenids, but also because I haven't really updated in forever. (Besides the whole shooting thing. But that's not usual content.) I just checked and the last sewing-related entry was over a month ago. How sad!
This is all just lots of evil costuming plans, typical of anyone with costume-ADD. But I haven't really had any in a while (besides the tentative Hallowe'en costume that I decided not to make because we weren't going to a party; as of tonight, oh, apparently we're going to a party. Dammit. Now I have no time to finish said costume and nothing to wear yet again. Gah.), so here goes.
First, there is going to be a dance sometime in November, here at the College. Not just any dance, though (which is rare in itself, as this is college, not high school; they don't have dances), a masquerade. A masquerade...yaaaay! It was originally my friend Vicky's idea; she's a CA (or RA as they call them in every other school in America), so they have to plan events, and she thought of a masquerade. Vicky's a girl after my own heart. *grin* So she told us about this last Wednesday, and since then there have been various meetings and things, and apparently all that's left is for "Them" to approve the specifics. Whoever "They" are; the higher-ups, I'm assuming.
And of course the second I heard about it, I thought, "I need a new dress!" The idea is actually to just wear the old prom/formal dresses that most people have laying around that they used once and never wore again, and we'll make masks, but what fun is there in that for a costumer? Besides, I made my prom dress for my junior year prom, didn't go to my senior prom (how sad, yes, I know; I got over it quickly, trust me), and ended up taking the dress apart summer before freshman year to use the fabric in my 18thc stays. And actually, I'm still using it...the hat I'm wearing to the Ren faire this weekend is made out of the same taffeta. So my point is, I don't actually have a suitable dress to wear, so I'm perfectly justified in making a new one. Right?
First, this is (for once) not going to be a Period-Correct Garment. I've managed to get that particular stick out of my ass long enough to put this dress together. I think. But no zippers still! I'm going for a generally 1890s shape, because it's trim and pretty elegant, I think. The bodice will be sleeveless, and the skirt will be a basic gored one, based on a Butterick pattern that I still need to buy. I'm cheating and using patterns, by the way. Tweaking, yes, but I just don't have time to draft from scratch.
And the best part of not being historically accurate? I get to use silk dupioni, which I looove, but is really too slubby to be used in really good conscience in most costumes I make. I was looking around ebay at blue silks, and had narrowed it down to three, I think, when I thought to look in the greens, and my eye was immediately caught by this:

Helloooo, emerald green silk! Fell in love immediately, and bought it over the weekend; I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it ships quickly!
The fabric actually puts me in mind of de Polignac's masquerade dress in MA, which I admit didn't hurt in my decision to buy it!
And happily, the fabric now matches my mask that I bought from the ren faire last year, as it does my old prom jewelry (that was a green dress too), so I'm good to go!
Now all I need to do is make almost the entire dress (or the parts that need to be machined!) over my fall break: Friday night, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, and some of Wednesday. Sunday's the Ren Faire, and Saturday night I'll be finishing up faire stuff over Ali's house, so we'll see what happens!
