Short version: I had a great time, and got to meet [livejournal.com profile] padawansguide , which was doubly awesome, as we share both loves of costuming and the Beatles! But it's sadly very probably going to be the last Poe birthday celebration.

Long version, containing dislike of Baltimore, bridges, stew, and pictures, naturally )

4-something in the morning, and I'm updating on here. But THE DRESS IS DONE except for the hem and three hooks and eyes SO I WANTED TO POST ABOUT IT. The sleeves are weird, wrinkly, and sort of horrible, actually, but LALALA DON'T CARE, CAN'T HEAR YOU. I do actually know why they're wrinkly and horrible (for once I made sleeves too loose instead of too tight), but I don't caaaaare. I was going to add the cutouts before I wear it again (when? who knows), so I can fix them then as well.

Great, now I'm hungry.

I survived the cartridge pleating! I should have done another line of stitching, but I Couldn't Take It Any More, so I didn't. It'll do.

I have high (if possibly unrealistic) hopes of actually finishing my dress tonight, probably minus the hem -- I still have to do the sleeves, but I'm not doing the cutouts in them (too bad, so sad), so they won't take too long, I HOPE. I've got a mockup of them now that I just have to fit to the armscye. Yay for the two-part sleeve I made for my gaulle -- a sleeve is a sleeve is a sleeve, thank goodness.

I wanted a nice chemisette, but I'm thinking that's not going to happen! How about a half-assed chemisette? Something's gotta go down the front of my bodice, or I shall be very cold and inappropriately hanging out, thanks to the cutouts! Which Lil Sis said, and I quote, "looks pretty cool." Which may be the first time she's ever said that about anything I've made, so color me impressed.

I'm also thinking of wearing the cameo brooch I inherited last year with this outfit...basic Internet research tells me it's probably not 19thc, but that doesn't really bother me. What does is that the same research tells me cameos weren't really popular til after c 1850, so my 1844 dress might be a bit early for that, and the fashion plates I've seen do seem to bear that out. I'm trying to decide how much that bothers me.

Yes, I actually WORRY ABOUT THESE TYPES OF THINGS. *eyeroll* Nerd alert!

Edit: And just to inform you all, I think the end of the world may be nigh, because Lil Sis just came and asked if I wanted to watch the end of Tommy, cause it was on TV, and she VOULUNARILY HAD PUT IT ON. Wow. I've decided she has a secret weakness for men with fluffy blond hair who look good shirtless, and I am totally going to exploit this to get her to listen to my music.

GAAAAHHHH I HATE HATE HATE GAUGING SKIRTS AKA CARTRIDGE PLEATING

I wish I wouldn't be really annoyed with myself for not cartridge-pleating the skirt of my gown, but I would, because THAT'S HOW 1840s DRESSES WERE MADE. (Okay, I did find one example dated to late '30s-early '40s that is knife pleated, but most are gauged, "whenever the nature of the material permitted it." *scowl*)

That is all.

Progress: Cut out all the pieces for my dress bodice in lining, interlining, and wool tonight, and I was really going to start making the piping, I promise, but then my mom asked if I wanted to go for a walk in the snow, and of course I did. So...derailed yet again from sewing! The snow's so pretty, though. I think we'd gotten at least three inches by the time we got back from our walk an hour ago. Will not be fun if I have to drive in it tomorrow, but we shall see about that.

I did manage to finish fitting the bodice for my dress today before work, but had errands to run, so that's all I did. And now I'm tired and don't feel like cutting out the pieces. Lameness!

Tomorrow I work 10-3, and for once I'm glad I go in for an early shift, as I'll be getting out just when the snow's predicted to start. Which is better than driving in when the snow's starting, and hoping Corporate decides to close early enough to not have us die on the roads while driving home. I'm scheduled for Wednesday as well, but am hoping for a snow day (like I'm an elementary school kid or something) so I can have a whole day of sewing!

Sometimes. Today I did, yay for me. Had a stupid meeting at work this morning, but was off the rest of the day, so I decided, dammit, I really need to sew something! ...After I go see Black Swan. By myself, because I have boring friends, and I was afraid it would be out of theaters if I waited much longer. So I finally saw it, and wow. Fantastic. I left the theater feeling slightly bonkers myself.

And those costumes. *gets all googly-eyed* [livejournal.com profile] cleopatramwi is already doing a Black Swan costume, which I have no doubt is going to be fabulous, and I'd feel a bit of a copycat for being all, "Eeee, I wanna Black Swan costume tooooooo!" Hmm. Will mull this over in my ickle brains for a while and see what happens. (Lord, and there I go, doing a Google images search on the costumes, "just in case.")  I've already got the shoes! Yes, I used to do ballet when I was in high school, and every once in a while, I put the shoes on again and do a few steps. People are never surprised when I tell them I was in ballet..."You look like a dancer." So...I'm thin and have small boobs. Thank you. And I was never particularly good at ballet!

Also, now I want to go see a performance of Swan Lake. The music's been playing in my head allllll day. Rather conveniently, I might be able to, as the Pennsylvania Ballet is doing Swan Lake in March. Coincidence that they're doing that ballet when fourteen of their dancers were in Black Swan? I THINK NOT.

Ballet goofiness aside, I actually did come home and sew things.

Things. Things get long. )

Poe dress

Super-exiting update on the Poe dress progress: Today I cut the panels for the skirt and sewed them together. Also found some medium-weight Ugly cotton in a similar shade to the taupe wool, so I decided to half-line the skirt instead of fully lining it, because there wasn't enough cotton to line the whole thing. The wool was a pain to iron, because it really was the end of the bolt, so there were all these stubborn wrinkles that refused to come out. Ah well. For less than $3.50/yd, I'm still not complaining! Had to run out to Jo-ann's for thread that matches the wool (I was annoyed), because I didn't have any Ugly Taupe colored thread. Imagine that.

Poe

Executive decision has been made regarding Poe: I'm going on the Sunday, so, yes, I need the dress finished!

This decision has been brought to you courtesy of having told friend M about it, and since she loves Edgar Allen Poe and has no problem with dressing up in weird clothes, she's coming with me. I can throw something together for her if she visits me a couple times in between now and then. Won't be as nice nor correct as mine, but we're both okay with this!

Plus that means even if you LJers end up going on Saturday evening I won't have spent all that time on the damn underwear for nothing! ;)

Went to the chip shop near me for lunch and actually got the haddock and chips this time...delightful. And mushy peas...I don't know what's in them (besides the obvious) but they taste fantastic. This trip was occasioned by me telling all my friends YOU NEED TO GO TO THIS PLACE. So we did, and now I feel like a fat kid. Ouf. Very full.

I got quite the haul in the mail today...and it was all very welcome (except for the mail about my loans, ew): got my wool from fabric.com, my copy of The Song Remains the Same on DVD, and my costume pr0n books from Amazon. Which are 17th and 18th Century Fashion in Detail, 19th Century Fashion in Detail, and Fashioning Fashion (which is amazing, all costumers go buy it now. There is a chapter called Bling, how can it not be good?).
