bye-bye, photobucket

I was GOING to do a post on my finished overskirt for the dinner dress, but it appears my ten years' loyalty to Photobucket is officially done, so I'm setting up a flickr account and sending them a nastygram tonight instead. They're getting rid of their 3rd-party hosting feature on all accounts that don't pay $40/MONTH. I do pay to host my photos (not a lot, but 10 years of costuming makes for a lot of pictures, so I don't mind having a paid account) so the 3rd-party hosting will go through the end of the year for me. Buuuuut I'm certainly not going to pay FORTY DOLLARS A MONTH so I can link pictures on fricking DW, so I'm essentially going to lose 10 years of pictures in this journal. (ETA: Not to mention everything on Blogger. Arrgh.)

Unless I want to go through over a thousand journal entries and relink them to flickr, once I get everything uploaded there. I don't.

So...slightly pissed at the moment!

Fuck! I've been using Photobucket too.

I completely missed these news. I was planning on leaving Photobucket anyway but I thought I still had time to set things up. Do you know how I might find out how much time I have before the 3rd party image hosting ends for me?

Alright, I did misread - photos will be embedded through the end of *next* year (2018) for a mid-level ("plus"? I think they called it before?) account, which is what I have. Provided I keep paying. :P

This sneaky little "TOS update" lays it all out. Actually went into effect a couple weeks ago, but I thought it was just a usual meaningless update, which I almost never read. http://blog.photobucket.com/please-review-latest-changes-photobucket/

Yeah. Depending on your account level, the embedded pics may stay up through next year, but...wow. Way to kill a good chunk of the old blogs of the internet, Photobucket.

Yeah, that is really shitty. I used to use photobucket but transitioned to Flickr. I still have older stuff on Photobucket that I have been slowly, for years, trying to move to Flickr. But I know I'm going to have broken images everywhere. That's a ridiculous extortion fee from Photobucket. Lame. I'm sorry you are getting screwed by it.

The article you linked above so correctly pointed out the transient nature of our internet content! Siiigh. And here I thought I was being so clever by not having hosted my pics on LJ for years, so if/when they die, I'd still have my photos! Ha ha ha. At least I can still download them and try to go back through at least the past couple years and link to flickr before I delete the photobucket account (because EFF YOU PHOTOBUCKET I HOPE YOU CRASH AND BURN), but eek, even the idea of that is daunting.

Rather than Flickr, I would HIGHLY recommend Ipernity. It's so much better than Flickr in terms of use and in terms of privacy. Flickr was bought out years ago and they decided to change things without consulting their users - and literally told the users to shut it when the user based complained. I've been using Ipernity for years and love it.

But weren't you talking fairly recently about the possibility of the site shutting down? I could be conflating you with somebody else haha. But if they don't have a lot of user traffic I'm not keen on having to move again in the end.
