Aug. 3rd, 2015 11:59 pmNow that we're done with that 1920s distraction, let's get back to business. (Although Robin pointed out to me that The Dumpiest Dress looks like a Wenesday Addams dress, which made me like it a lot more. Did I need a Halloween costume??)
I haven't forgotten about my Lost Hope dress, but the weather forecast has the temperature below 90 later in the week, so I'm going to wait a few more days to brave the sewing room of Hades. In the meantime...
I dragged out my cane-boned stays today, the ones I broke; replaced the snapped reeds and reinforced them with another line of cane. In channels I hand-sewed to the back of the interlining, which was about as much fun as it sounds. I was debating whether to cut my losses with these and just make another pair of plastic-boned ones, but decided I'm stubborn, dammit! But I'm going to wear them around the house for a week on my down time, before binding them, and if they break again we are done. So far, so good.
And all this because I really want to be able to fit my bird dress over 1770s stays. Bird dress, you say? Behold, burds:

Well, you see, I really wanted a chintz with a white background, but I also did not want to pay $12+ per yard for it, and this was easily the most 18thc of the prints I could find in my price range. Except it had birds on it. Hmm. Never seen birds on an 18thc chintz. Hmmmm. The Google came up with a grand total of one example that looked legit (two, if you count the same print in two colorways as two), and despite it looking more upholstered than apparel-ed, I cheerfully bought it anyway.

(See, burd! All systems go!)
Shhh, I'm not a reenactor, I don't care. :D
And it's only 28" wide, which is both more period and more annoying, as I now need four panels in my petticoat rather than two or two-and-a-half. I also started sewing those together today.
