Belvidere

Hooray, an actual event! A few of us managed to get up to Belvidere's Victorian weekend today - it's a cute little Victorian town in North Jersey that has this weekend every September. They've got lots of oldey-timey stuff, food, and vendors. Afterwards, a carload of us drove out to Fabricland on a tip from a friend, that there were $5/yd silks. Between that and the silks from Belvidere...we were pretty well packed in!

Unfortunately I remembered to snag a passer-by to snap a picture of us only after the group had split up, but I did get a couple of the four of us.

As you can see, I wore my old early 1860s grey dress, because it was just this side of cool enough for it (80 is my usual cutoff for wool). And because every other time I've worn it has been with some kind of outerwear over it, so you can't see much of it! It's nothing special (and has both some dumb mistakes and some unfinished things...like a hem that's not turned up and quick-basted...yes, I made this three years ago...), but it's nice when I don't feel like being covered in fluffles. Though I suspect those would have been a hit.

Thought my red spoon bonnet was a bit too wintry, so I wore the hat I usually wear with the fluffy beast. Ooh, mixing it up. How daring. Alice borrowed my early 1870s little hat, which we deemed Close Enough. I like when people borrow things so I can see how they look! (How does it look? Well, the ribbons are starting to look a little tired, as they're at least five years old...but, um, I'm lazy.)

Oh, and I met a girl that's a fan of my blog. I'm sure it happens all the time with you Famous Costumers out there, but this is the first time somebody's come up to me because they've recognized me from my costume site, and I was absolutely tickled by it! Nice ego boost, especially when she told me she hoped it wasn't creepy-stalkery or anything, and I was like, NO FEAR, I'VE DONE THAT TOO. You know who you are, Famous Costumers. ;)

She volunteers at a recreation of a middle-NJ 1830s Industrial town, which we thought was very cool, and promised to add it to our list of Things To Crash At Some Point. It's Allaire Village, for my locals. They've got Christmas lantern tours!

Eurgh. Horrid wrinkly bodice. But it is comfortable!

We left Belvidere relatively early, but the Land of the Five-Dollar Silk was over an hour away and closed at five, so off we went, two-thirds of us in our 1860s undies. But it was for Very Important Things! (Actually, the fabric seller at Belvidere had silks by the roll that worked out to $5/yd or less too, but I didn't see anything there that needed to come live with me. Lots of it wanted to, but...I was trying to be good.)

And we bought ALL the things at Fabricland. Probably a good thing we didn't have another person in the back seat of that car...

Help! I'm being suffocated by silk rolls!

Trying to fit all the rolls in...um, nope. Let's try it agan.

Success! Mostly. At least, nothing was sticking out the window. Erin's a good sport!

I'll have you know that only one of those rolls was mine (and one that fit in a bag in the trunk, heh). The yellow and green and red stripe taffeta was in three pieces on the remnant table, so I got it for even less. 8.25 yards of that, and 13 yards of the raspberry stripe taffeta, that Alice and I have joint custody of. Neither of us has decided what to do with it, so we'll split it when we do!

I'm fairly sure that at least one of them needs to be something 18th century, though. Possibly both. We'll see.

There was also a fashion show at Belvidere that Needs To Be Discussed, but it's going to get its own separate post, and I'm tired!

You looked great yesterday! Nice running into you! There was more to your group? Who else was with you?

Looks like a great fabric haul! Good to know there's a reasonable source nearish-by. I'll be sure to ping Medha when I'm shopping for silk!

You were in our group, silly! ;) I should have just made J take a picture of us but I totally didn't think of it then.

They had some really nice stuff! Some of it that we'd originally thought looked like silk turned out not to be, but it's still really nice synthetic.

It's a nice little event!

OMG, the seller at Belvidere had literally barrels full of tubes of mostly silk! And apparently that's not even a quarter of his inventory. It's probably a good thing I don't live closer...

It was great to meet you, too! Hehe, I don't mind at all, and I've even given you a shoutout in my post from tonight, so you may get a couple more friend requests! :D
