Jazz Age Lawn Party
Aug. 20th, 2012 08:39 pmFirst off, I realized there's a grand total of one photo of me standing in the dress! I'll have to get some proper photos after I wash the thing.
Second, all but one photo is stolen from
madamekat. It's a good thing I have friends who take pictures!
I had to get up at the unholy hour of 6.30am to ensure I had enough time to get myself together (apparently that still wasn't enough time to put my camera in the right purse!), and wasted a bunch of time trying to figure out WTF to do with my hair. Eventually I stuck it in a barrette and called it Good Enough.
Drove about an hour north to Hamilton to catch the 9.30 train to NYC. I'm always amused by people's reactions to me in odd clothing; my dress could pass for one of those conservative religious sects, but paired with heels and red lipstick? Probably a little baffling to the adults. And the little kids are the best, they're not afraid to just stare!
Getting off the train, I ended up making friends with a girl about my age who told me she liked my dress, and asked if I was going to the Jazz Age Lawn Party. Yes! Okay, we can be friends! Plus she offered me a cupcake. I don't take cupcakes from people on public transportation, but appreciated the offer. She was going to the South Ferry stop as well, and since she wasn't sure exactly where she was going, we took the subway together (like I'm some kind of 7th Avenue Local expert! Hardly).
Happily, about a minute after getting in line for the Governors Island ferry, I saw Judy (
ladyxjade) and hubby Steve walk in, so I made a giant flying leap past the group that had got in line behind me and exclaimed, "I KNOW YOU!!" Well, Steve didn't really know me, so that was probably weird for him, but that's okay.
Judy and I scored the best seat on the ferry - right under the giant exhaust system noisily blowing hot smelly air directly onto us. (If anyone smelled exhaust during the day...now you know what it was.)
It had been raining earlier - I was cursing all weather while doing my hair at 7am - and was a little cloudy when we got there, but the sun soon came out in full force! For the first few hours, we met up with
jubilima, checked out the vendors, and then THANK GOD got lunch, because directly afterward the line for food grew to be about ten miles long and never went down!
By the time
madamekat and
blackcat452 arrived, our formerly nice comfortable spot by the compost (really) was in full boiling sun, so we relocated to a slightly less horrible spot and proceeded to chat and drink! This was about when my VIP unlimited drinks wristband came in handy...all the St Germain one could drink! The Sangria was nice (I ate all the fruit out of it, most uncouthly fishing it out with my fingers), but I liked the St Germain cocktail better.

bellamissella and
jennil arrived a while after we'd moved camp, after
jubilima had left. And we all continued with the very important business of socializing and drinking! I didn't think I was tipsy at all til I got up to get another drink, butchered a platic cup with the heel of my shoe, and nearly fell over with laughter!

Okay, fine, maybe a little tipsy.

Regrettably, I make faces like this when totally sober as well.
(I only started to regret that wristband while waiting in the Longest Line Ever for the ferry at the end of the day, and having to shuffle back to use the most frightening port-a-potty I've ever seen! Riiight...drinking makes you have to pee.)
And here's the only picture of the dress with me not sitting on the ground (which we did a lot of, and my suspenders were really not that comfortable to sit on all day, so I kept fidgeting!)

And I really can't explain that face. My theory is that Judy and I had just seen another butt. (You see, a fair amount of women appeared to think that flapper=fringe that just covers your ass, so that if you take too big a step or there's a slight breeze, the world gets a show.)
Oh, and when Carly, Jenni, and I were over in the drinks line, one of those ladies (except it was red sparkly fabric and feathers) told me she liked my dress ("Thank you...") because I looked "so sweet and innocent!" "uh. Thanks...?" I don't know.
Lots of people took photos of us (but I can't find any online anywhere! You all suck), and we even got inverviewed by some guy in suspenders. He asked why we liked to dress up in these clothes, and Carly gave him a long, quite intelligent-sounding answer - and then he asked what our favorite part of this even was so far, and I piped up, "THE FREE DRINKS!", holding up my own, and we all cracked up.
We agreed that's the snippet that's probably going to make it into the program, if any of it does - the part where we all look like a bunch of lushes. But very well-dressed lushes.
As I mentioned, the wait for the ferry back felt eternal, and then I had to run down the platform at Penn Station to catch my train. Which must have looked pretty funny. Unfortunately sat across from an incredibly loud and obnoxious family on the ride back, which was a local train so seemed never-ending! And I was quite dozy on the drive back from the station (constantly telling myself I AM SO AWAKE RIGHT NOW), but made it in one piece.
Next year we think we'll bring our own food (and drink...), as none of us were sure exactly what this consisted of. Now we know - and won't get a spot in the sun! And I'll bum a ride with someone, so I don't have to bring food on the train. But it was a lot of fun, and we'll definitely be going again! It's good to go to an event that wasn't planned by one of us every once in a while, too - and such a well-populated event, too!

Date: 2012-08-22 02:07 am (UTC)Yes, next year: Arrive at the beginning, 1 ferry instead of 2; bring our own food; bring our own drinks; get a spot under the trees; leave around 3 so there isn't an hour long wait to get back on the ferry.
