christmas dress: sleeves
Dec. 7th, 2016 11:54 pmRobin texted to wake me up at a completely awful hour this morning, to get me sewing! I grumbled, rolled over, and actually managed to drag my ass out of bed at a human time, which is unusual.
So! I sewed pretty much all-day-minus-hours-spent-at-work, which if I do again tomorrow, I may actually be able to get this thing done. Shock and awe.
Last night I pleated up both the sleeves; they don't exactly match because one came out much neater than the other! And I liked the messier sleeve better, amusingly. Ah well. Vun sleeve...ah ha ha.

Two sleeves! Ahem.

I just knife pleated up the silk til I thought there were enough pleats, and then tacked it down in a couple lines (somewhat drunken lines).

I will never not be amused by a sleeve that stands up on its own! I thought about doing a more involved cuff...but then thought better of it! So I just made a little lace ruffle and tacked it in.

It's some sort-of antique lace I picked up a few years ago at a craft fair (I say sort-of because it's got a nice pattern and is fairly fine, but it's definitely nylon, and therefore can only be so old!) that I gathered up a bit and stitched to a narrow twill tape, to make it easily removeable. Partly so I can take it off and wash it if I need to, and partly so I can make detatchable long sleeves (at some distant point, not now), if I have enough fabric, and not have a stupid little lace ruffle randomly chilling on my upper arm. Well, and partly because it's stupid little fiddly work, and I like stupid little fiddly work!

And then I sewed the sleeves in and piped the neckline. HEY IT LOOKS LIKE A PROPER BODICE NOW. So, on to the neckline trim! If I can get the back of it done tonight I'll be in decent shape... It's fakey-fake pleats that I've seen on at least one dress (somewhere...): just strips of fabric folded in half, ironed, and stitched down on top of each other to cover the previous line of stitching. I'll do more on the front, but the backs are getting five strips, and I've currently got two on.

Note to self: pull that damn white basting out before you actually wear the dress...
