18thc not-plaid
Oct. 10th, 2016 12:56 am(Why hello there old tag! Clearly I've been planning this dress for years...)
I finished mulling Robin's bonnet today in good time, and then decided to give myself full license to be naughty. I haven't especially felt like sewing much of anything lately, so I've got nothing to lose if I let the CADD come out to play. Robin and Alice and I (and anybody else in the area who might like to come!) are going to an "18th century market" at Washington's Crossing next Sunday, and that seems as good a reason as any to finish this dress - a closed-front 1770s wool cross-barred dress.
Well...I say "finish" like I'd done anything besides cut the linen lining and cut a piece of fabric that was too narrow to do the back en forreau pleats properly (whereupon I bundled it away in annoyance, and there it sat for at least a year). So today I took it out, unpinned the unfortunate (and not-mirrored) back pleats, pieced in more fabric, and made pleats that mirrored.
Which was really, really horrible, by the way. So many tiny lines going both ways to match up! Took hours and hours to get it all stitched down, and it's still not quite even. I eventually gave up in disgust, though.

And it would probably look nicer if I'd managed to angle those light-colored stripes on the outside of the pleats, too - but I'm not particularly angled, so I couldn't wedge any more fabric under those existing pleats at the waist without the bulk showing through, so we'll just have to be satisfied with this. :P
