cap shenanigans

I was off today, and horribly lazy, so I decided I wanted a zero-thinking hemming project while sitting on the sofa marathoning Law & Order:SVU. Okay...cap? Sure, let's make another cap. So I cut out all my pattern pieces (I cut the crap and bought the Country Wives: Beribboned Caps 1780-1810 pattern) and thought I didn't have enough of my nice expensive organza, and so cut it out of the cheaper Dharma Trading stuff. And then remembered why I didn't want to use it for caps. It's SO squeedgy! (Technical term.)
And then I decided to double-check whether I could fit it on the Silk Baron organza, and I could just. So I cut it out again out of that one. It's more than twice the price but I just like to sew with it so much more! Too bad I have 10 yards of the Dharma stuff and none of the Silk Baron now, haha. (I bought the 10 yards for trim...hems on the straight are all right.) So I'd best be happy with this cap!
So! I hemmed the band and am currently whip-gathering the crown to it. And tonight is apparently Knots In The Thread Night, and I attached about a quarter of the crown to the band before realizing the hem of the band was on the outside, oooops.
And I haven't forgotten about the poor Indian King Tavern - with the FFC sale on, I got a couple of checked linens to make aprons and kerchiefs. Only a yard of each because I don't want everyone to match, and 3 of the 4 linens were the same check in different colorways. But at $4.18/yd I couldn't say no! (Unless they're sold out already.)

I've had the always-fun "well this doesn't look remotely like the fabric or description", but not fiber shenanigans yet. Thankfully this site's costume bits are more form than function (and I don't think anybody would know what to do with a burn test, lol)!

Date: 2015-08-26 04:15 am (UTC)Also, thanks for the head's up on the Dharma Trading organza. I was thinking of ordering some to make caps because it's fairly cheap, but now I know it's cheap for a reason. XP

Date: 2015-08-26 04:35 am (UTC)Yeaaaaah, I find that organza a little fussy. I mean, somebody with more patience than I have would probably be fine with it (or if you wanted to starch/size it before working with it), and I might make a fancy apron out of it. But all those curved hems on the caps in that organza might actually kill me, haha!
