Today I had a day off work!

So I made a corset!

Well, most of a corset. It still needs binding and grommets. But not too bad.

Why did you waste a day making a new corset when you have one already, you nutter? I hear you asking. Well, in short? It kind of sucked. It was the first Victorian-type corset I ever made, and the construction was a bit dodgy. Plus not super-comfortable for long periods of wearing. It's okay for an afternoon event, but after wearing it all day at Gettysburg two years ago, I had a really awesome bruise on one hip where I'd put the boning in at a perfect angle for poking me all day. Can't imagine it would be any better wearing it Friday night, all Saturday, and half of Sunday!

Plus, if I'm going to finally finish off that grey wool dress, I may as well do it over a properly fitting corset, right? Not too worried about the fit of the ballgown since it laces shut. I'll stick a placket in if I have to.

I thought about just re-making the corset I had - I used the Foy patent, which I like a lot - but figured if I'm making a whole new corset I may as well make one that's more appropriate to the year, right? (The patent's dated 1868.) And I wanted one that's shorter in the waist to wear for my early '60s outfits. So I hauled out good old Corsets and Crinolines today, and drew out the 1860 corset, and off we went!

It's made of cotton duck (as usual! I'll be using that til I run out of that crap) and white silk dupioni...neither of which are really correct, but the duck was in the Stash, and I got the silk for $8/yd (yes, with a thought to use it for this!), which isn't too shabby. And boned with zip ties, as usual.

I was planning to floss the bones and put a bit of lace round the top (at a later date! Don't worry, I wouldn't spend the time to do it now), but I'm not really sure if I will...the sewing on the bones is so messy. When I went to sew the bones in, my sewing machine decided now would be a really good time to act like it was possessed. It refused to sew correctly. I rethreaded it dozens of times, put a new bobbin in, cleaned it of all dust and fuzz, pleaded with it, cursed at it, and really did everything but drop it out the damn window! Which I threatened to do. And then it eventually, equally mysteriously, fixed itself, and has been chugging happily along ever since. Bastard. Thank you for wasting forty minutes of my time.

Anyway, that's why some of the bones look like I sewed them on drunk, while wearing a blindfold. Well, I can decide whether to bother with the flossing and lace later! On with the Overly Ambitious Sewing!
