mandie_rw: (1860s summer)
I told [livejournal.com profile] dragoneyes19 I was going to sew, and sew I did! (What else is there to do on yet another rainy day?) After spending probably a solid two hours on mockups, that is. I decided to be clever, and so fitted a high-necked darted bodice first, then cut it down to be the lining for a sheer dress - so I'll have less work when sewing for Gettysburg later!

Reminder of what I'm making; dress on the left; I'm using white striped organdy and a crap-ton of thin blue silk ribbon...

The basic bodice lining of white muslin is all sewn together, with hooks and eyes sewn on (I KNOW, WOW, right??), and am currently working on the sheer gathered bit at the neckline.

As an aside: I don't have the foggiest of the construction of this dress, so I'm making it up as I go! On my dress I've decided to use a very lightweight off-white cotton/silk to fill in the neckline and for the long straight sleeves under the big poufy ones. (Which I'm not sure even really exist in the plate, but I like having long sleeves on summer dresses! Sun=bad.) Anyway, I'm attaching those sheer bits to the lining and then building all the fluffy organdy stuff on top of that.

Progress has been slightly arrested by the cotton/silk's unwillingness to be subjected to the indignity of machine sewing, so all of that has to be hand sewn, sigh. Watch this space for photo proof of sewing tomorrow, though!

(I thought I'd hold off posting one photo of a white bodice lining today, because boring.)
