More Pennsbury stays
Jan. 15th, 2013 11:22 pmI want to get back into sewing for Pennsbury Manor, now that I have the time (heh), so tonight I spent a few hours messing about with the early 18th century stays pattern in Corsets and Crinolines. It's a little late for Pennsbury, as they interpret c.1700, but there wasn't a huge change in the shape of stays over that time - and it's much more practical than the 1680s off-the-shoulder stays that are also in C&C.
I changed the stays to lace both back and front, but eliminated the stomacher. I know they were common early in the century, but since these are going to live in a drawer for volunteers to wear, I figured 1/stays one can easily put on oneself are good, and 2/ you know some poor volunteer will either lose the stomacher or put it on wrong, so I'll leave well enough alone for now!
(Will probably draft the stomacher back in when I get around to making my own pair - but these are practice for my pair!)
Got as far as cutting out the interlining for two pairs of stays tonight in two different sizes; next up will be digging through the scrap bin for some linen or wool...

And that's the shape I ended up with...plausible for 1700, I think. (I hope.)
Going to drape the bodice for the 1913 dress tomorrow, I swear!
