Woo - I'm surprised I managed to work on the stays for so many days in a row without embarking on some new flight of costume-ADD...well, it's come back now with a vengeance. I spent a good part of the day looking at 1920s-related things online, then it was on to the 18th century riding habits!

To be fair, the riding habit isn't quite as much of a flight, as I've wanted a habit for ages, and I decided this was going to be the Year of the Riding Habit after [livejournal.com profile] blackcat452 and I talked riding habits on the car ride to and from Fort Fred this spring.

Since then, I've been on the lookout for waistcoat fabric - I have everything else for the outfit in the Stash already. I've got five yards of a fairly substantial light blue wool for the habit itself, and have enough fine linen left from the last time I bought it (years ago!) for the shirt.

Oh, except for buttons. I'm going to have to buy a crap-ton of buttons sooner or later.

There was actually some gorgeous silk at Fort Fred (I think the Silly Sisters had it?) that I was eyeballing; silver-grey ground with a multicolored swirly baroque design, that I didn't buy because I was on a pretty strict budget, and couldn't think of anything I'd use it for. And on the car ride back, I realized it would have been perfect for the riding habit's waistcoat. Dammit! Always buy fabric when it calls to you!

So like I said, I've been looking for waistcoat fabric since then. I've had it stuck in my head than I want a patterned fabric, even though of the images I've seen, more actually have a solid colored waistcoat than not. Don't care, want pattern. And I want it out of silk lampas. Which is surprisingly hard to find!

Well, not silk lampas itself; that's quite easy, it's all over the internet. Under $100/yd, that's not quite as easy, but there's still dozens of patterns to be found for that price on ebay. And how many of them are actually slightly 18th century-appropriate? Not many!! There are actually a few that would make a very pretty sack gown, with the pattern on a fairly large scale, but I'm not in the market for lampas for an entire gown, thanks.

Today, though, I found this:

What do you think, for the waistcoat of a riding habit c1765-75? The scale's small enough I think; the diamonds are about an inch across.

To my 18thc experts, do tell me if it's not right; I'm not that attached to it yet! Or if it would look stupid with a light blue habit. If so, I might give up on the lampas and go shopping for silk satin instead...Oh. Or velvet. Velvet could be fun!

(Just occurred to me...OMG, this yellow silk would totally have been flown in from France, amirite, fellow Germantown attendees?? Bahahaha)

EDIT EDIT: Because I can't get off the internet and even pretend to sew something... Maybe velvet would be better? I'm thinking a midnight blue velvet, which would be a better contrast with the light blue wool...

Also cheaper, even in silk (which this is. Yes, I'll be handsewing it either way...).

Now I can't decide! Halp halp!
