aw yiss, winter break

Two weeks off from school, and I shall do all the things!

(Or more probably, none of the things. But that's ok too.)

(I was going to make a concerted effort to do at least one Visible Home Improvement-y Thing over break, but now the paint I want isn't on sale any more, and the peel-and-stick wallpaper I want for the living room accent wall to cover the ridiculous giant yellow square from where we removed the mirror, is sold out til the end of January. Will order the wallpaper now anyway, but obviously won't be doing that over break!)

Time to think about all of the costuming for next year, right? Of course right!

As always, I reserve the right to do absolutely none of this, but it's damn entertaining to plan, so here it is.
Planning is fun )

Cats:
Ferdinand has developed a habit of lurking in dark hallways and then skittering suddenly and loudly on the hardwood floors when you unknowingly get within striking distance. You scare him (SKITTER!) and then he scares you (GAH!) and then you scare him more (SKITTERSKITTERZOOOM!). It really doesn't help that he's all black from the immediately-above view, so you don't see him til it's Almost Too Late. Probably doesn't help his weenie tendencies, but we can't SEE you, dude. Stop lurking in dark hallways!

He was also ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED at the nabbing for a manicure the other day, and wouldn't even come up for treats for the rest of the evening. Bitch, it's your claws that were outrageous, you kept getting stuck in the couch.

Lili continues to nap on top of the couch while I'm on the computer, and it continues to be adorable. She's much better behaved while getting her manicures.

Sewing:
Poked a bit more at the charcoal grey flannel jumper but am at the zipper-setting point, which I did start, but which needs to be done in daylight, due to the black thread on dark grey and the plush-i-ness of the flannel! Too awful to do in artificial light, can't see a damn thing. That will have to wait til next weekend, then!

Plotting:
With the whole setting-a-date thing, I need to figure out what to wear! The park is still being considered, but the other party involved in this wedding would really prefer we have a party somewhere drinkies are a possibility, which they aren't in the park. So we're in the midst of pricing out a rental at the town community center - slightly less cheapie, but we have a budget from his dad and an offer from my mom, so while I still have no intention of spending A Lot, we have a bit of wiggle room.

But the important Thing out of all that is that, I would wear something different at the park than at an evening party with drinkies! Suit for park or daytime shindig, cocktail dress for evening party. I have Ideas (of course I do), but I won't get too into them here til we decide officially on the event space.

(Also I 100% reserve the right to toss any and all sewing plans for a wedding party outfit and buy myself a vintage inspired dress instead at any time LOL.)

distract, distract

Well! On a personal level, the brou-ha-ha in the online community last weekend over The Williamsburg Incident (if you happen to not have heard anything, God bless) was perfectly timed to make me want to work on historical costume even less.

(I'm certainly not saying the historical costuming community doesn't need to self-reflect and make improvements...I'm just, personally, tired of the extremes. It might be easier to disengage with the community entirely, apart from here. Or at least leave the Facebook groups!)

Anyway. Probably needless to say, I sewed pretty much nothing since last time I posted! I poked the c1900 shirtwaist a bit and sewed...two more seams? Meh.

BUT I am feeling creative energy more in the "everyday" clothing direction. For me, that means vintage. And, extremely weirdly, that also apparently means 1930s.

BIZZARO WORLD, YO.

I have never been into the '30s before. I've seen plenty of people make very charming pieces, but (like 1920s) I've never felt an affinity for it personally. But there's a somewhat-tentative "vintage" lawn party being planned for late July, and I think I'd like to make something new for it. And somehow that "something" needs to be 1930s. I briefly even entertained the idea of beach pyjamas, because they are chic AF and seem like SUCH FUN to swan around in...but I'd also like something I can wear to work rather than just being a costume piece, and those aren't quite it! Plus they take a fair bit of fabric yardage.

So today I, cheerfully and extravagantly, bought two '30s Wearing History patterns. I couldn't decide which I wanted for the lawn party, but I'd like to add both to my wardrobe...so I bought both. The Gina dress and the Chic Ahoy slacks set, both of which I think are adorable. (I also have a "Retro" McCalls or whatever they branded their line 1933 sundress, but it remains to be seen whether that pattern has 7" of ease and is thus Too Annoying To Work With, so I wanted to have Options.)

We'll see if I still feel inspired when those come in (and whether I have to buy fabric for them - I might have something stashed that will work but will have to check yardages), but do expect to see more '30s around here some time in the near future!

(She says, filled with optimism.)

Heh. Heh heh BONNET

Okay, well, I solved my "which part of the Regency do I want to make a dress from" dilemma...

...by being wildly extravagant and buying myself a Timely Tresses bonnet!

It's v. nice:
screenshot regency bonnet
And will solidly put me in the post-1810 years. Yay for not having to actually make decisions! I've been plotting all week - when my virtual students were writing essays and taking quizzes, I was not in fact doing Teacher Prep Stuff! It's very close to what I would have made myself (barring color of trimmings, because I hadn't settled on that. But I love red!), so what the hell, Treat Yo Self, right? Let a professional sew that straw form together!

It's not TERRIBLY blowing my budget, either...pricey, yes, but what do I do this teaching crap for except to buy costume stuff, amirite? Now I'm really not allowed to buy yardage for the outfit, though. (Notions, ok, yardage, not.) And I checked the fabric stash inventory list, and I forgot that I have a big chunk of white swiss dot that was on a stupid-good sale a few years ago...so I can in fact have a white dress as a base if I want, if the old one doesn't fit any more.

So, depending on weather, and whether (ha ha) we do April or July (or both!), I'm narrowing down the current final contestants to at least one of these, or some combination thereof:

- Cream figured poplin pelisse, trimmed with some color of silk (have red, might be too matchy? Investigation required)
- Little white swiss dot v.2.0
- Retrim red linen spencer (I really didn't have enough trim for the effect I wanted; it looks passable but I'd like it better redone)
- Sage green mini-stripe silk spencer (this week in Pinterest research I remembered what I wanted to do with it...something based on this. Not an exact recreation, but I quite like the 'petals' effect! Even though, ugh, so much piping...)

Regency costume musings

And I'll make a separate post for this, because the other post was getting a bit long, and this is really just for my own entertainment! A spring Regency picnic was suggested amongst the Local Peeps recently, and between that and trying on my new stays yesterday and being v. pleased, I'm very happily plotting enough outfits for a two-week getaway all spent in Regency!

(As we all know, I'll be lucky to actually finish one single solitary thing. But I don't care. It's a lovely snowy morning, and I'm thoroughly enjoying avoiding planning my lessons, drinking tea, and mentally costuming!)

Hat thing

Okay, you may notice that this is not the skirt from last weekend! The hat is still also Priority Status though; if I only manage to finish hat and skirt for the Longwood outing I'll be in fine shape. (Since I fatted out of my other 1890s winter skirt, and gave my hat to Robin, I really need to replace those! The rest of it - bodice, capelet, muff - is desirable but not vital.)

IG progress post here - it doesn't look like much yet, but I got all the hard stuff out of the way today - wiring, binding, and sewing the buckram pieces together. That's the part I don't like much; mulling, covering, and trimming are peanuts compared to wiring and binding in my mind! Well, okay, mulling's not that thrilling either, honestly...

Goal for tomorrow is to finish the mulling. After that I might start covering it, or maybe switch back to the skirt if I need a break from hand sewing. Or maybe pull out the lining from the fur coat. Who knows!

Also I've been enjoying some flights of fancy Costume-ADD today - which I won't post quite yet although I think I'm going to end up doing them both at some point this year. Neither of them will have a real reason to make them/place to wear them, but hey, that was how I costumed way way back in the mid-2000s, before I found local costuming peeps...I'm feeling more optimistic about making stuff without an event this year. At least right now. ;)

hahaha OOPS, I've changed my mind?

This is what happens when I'm teaching virtually and too many of my kids are working on independent assignments and I have time available to poke around the internet and decide to change my sewing plans for our Longwood winter stroll that probably won't happen anyway.

Funny part is, Miss Wacky Mismatched Separates has been on my 1898-1901 Pinterest board for months, but she didn't really catch my attention until today. (I was looking at hat shapes and colors, actually.) Like...okay, we've got a red jacket with a black and white striped facing and collar, also with randomly slashed (??) bits on the top of the shoulder; we've got a green skirt with loopy squiggly trim that doesn't really echo the geometric angles of the jacket facing; we've got a red hat (coordinating!) with a pinky-red monster bow thing (less coordinating!); finally, we've got what's either a dickey/cravat/guimpe/neckline filler, or full waist, that's *squints* orange?

Whaaaaat.

delineator march 1899

The only real down side of this outfit is that I'm not sure I can really reconcile a collared fur capelet to go OVER that, and I was rather looking forward to one! Might have to play Stack The Collars...

Poor plum wool. I'll use you eventually.

I have the red wool for the jacket and orange-red silk shantung for the guimpe/waist/thing, and I'm 90% sure the silk scrap bin has bits in the right colors for the hat. I might have supplies for the jacket facing and green wool for the skirt (although what I have is quite KELLY green and I'm still hording that for a Very Specific Dress, not sure if I want to sacrifice it for this skirt), will have to do some poking.

I should probably feel bad after getting my plans for the plum dress all settled and buying a couple of things for it, but...I don't! As time passes I'm less and less optimistic we'll actually get to go on this outing, and while the plum dress was okay, it didn't inspire me to start it for an event I think is going to be canceled. This wacky number totally does!

Also...you know I can't resist a snappy jacket. ;)

oh look a squirrel

I've said it before: I've always been easily distracted by new sewing projects, but this year is just beyond. I don't even know if I've sewn anything relating to the c1900 winter outfit since I last posted? Although in my defense, the dress pattern still hasn't actually shipped, so... and I was offered a late 1890s corset pattern to use but that hasn't come through yet either, so even if I wanted to to work on any of it, I wouldn't really be able to.

Well, maybe the hat. I did get the silk for it!

*wanders off in another direction*

Still can't find the missing piece of the orange plaid skirt (maybe in time for next summer) so cut out a different wool skirt last weekend, because that's how you deal with that, right? I really need to make a few more winter dresses rather than skirts, because after going through the dresses that don't fit any more (ahem) or are just worn out and doing a donation bag, my winter work clothes options are getting a bit thin on the ground. Not dire yet, though...so I'll be lucky if I actually manage to finish one dress. Maaaaaybe.

Also! I was shopping on fabric.com for some Seasonally Festive fabric for masks (because although my old Joanns is a three-minute drive from school, fuck them, I'm still lazily boycotting them) and came across this clearance fabric that somehow told me it wanted to be a Regency short gown and petticoat...and who am I to turn down talking fabric? I couldn't cite a specific example as to why it feels appropriately early-19th century to me, but I've developed a reasonably good eyeball for period-adjacent prints, and this isn't for a historic site or anything, plus it's a wonderfully practical (read: ugly) color...so I'm using it, fight me. I've wanted to make some kind of Regency "two-piece" since Katherine made her ADORABLE short gown for a Regency weekend way back when, but never really had a reason.

Well, I mean, I still don't have a reason, but whatever.

No idea when I'll start it, either - might be today, might be over Christmas break...WHO KNOWS. It did occur to me that I really ought to finish my half-done (??) short stays that I started, uhhh, ten months ago(?) rather than making this to fit over my old nasty corded bodiced petticoat. I could make it to wear over my 1790s stays, but I'd rather push it forward rather than back in date (Costume in Detail puts it at 1798-1800), plus the 1790s stays have those funny little padded balls on the back for skirt support that I don't necessarily want for this. So I probably should dig those unfinished stays out and at least get them wearable before diving into this outfit.

And who knows, maybe the 1900 dress pattern will show up in the mail this week and I'll suddenly want to make that! Or a new holiday-ish dress from the red-and-gold cotton that I also couldn't resist in this fabric.com order! Or maybe I'll randomly decide to make a new 1860s ballgown! Who the hell knows!

I did make a school week's worth of masks yesterday afternoon from that holiday fabric though, so there's something actually accomplished LOL.

the universe has to balance out somewhere

Sewed too much last weekend; had to balance it out by sewing almost nothing this weekend!

I didn't actually mean to be terribly flighty this weekend... but it was absolutely glorious fall weather so I had to spend at least one full afternoon outside, and it was a Tom weekend so I had to catch up on snuggling (45 degree nights are so much better for a damn radiator in bed with you than 80 degree nights!), so my only day to be remotely productive was Friday.

I did intend to be remotely productive; I got my impulse purchase of a yard of orange plaid wool in the mail this week, so thought maybe I could make a new skirt this weekend. I even posted something to IG with a pattern and a gleeful air. And then I actually opened the pattern envelope and discovered that Past Me had decided to try making the skirt at some time in the distant past, because it was not in fact in the envelope. Um...oops? So I spent a chunk of Friday afternoon digging through Piles of Random Crap piled around the sewing room. I did not find the pattern bits I was looking for (they have to be somewhere because I never throw anything out), but I did manage to sort and disappear some of the piles. And I finally just said OH FINE WHATEVER I'LL USE THIS ONE and cut the damn thing out. And sewed one seam. And that was it.

Better than nothing...I guess? I am officially recording my doubts right now that I'll finish anything for Poe, though! Maybe I should focus on making the bonnet before the dress, because then at least I'll have something new...

skirmish, stays, and SQUIRREL!

[personal profile] robinsnest  joined me for the annual "skirmish" at the Indian King Tavern on Saturday. She was a good sport to do so, as they ended up sticking us inside the tavern for the whole day, on the ground floor where the windows don't open and it was hot as ballz. And stuffy. Low-80s outside and breezy, but...yeah, inside. Every year before this I'd been able to sit outside on the porch til after the skirmish, which is when most people come through for a tour.

I didn't quite get my stays to an easy-to-transport-and-sew place by skirmish time, but since we were inside in dim light, it didn't matter, as I didn't do much sewing at all! Oh well. I got to spend the day with my wifey, that's overall better than sewing anyway. ;)

I made precisely zero new things for the skirmish, so I didn't get any pictures of me! I did make a new cap and a new apron in school over the past week or so (just to have something to do, not because I need more 18thc accessories, lordy), which Robin was happy to display. She, on the other hand, made a new linen stripey dress for the occasion, and is going to post about it soon (RIGHT??). Good thing we were both in linen...and were quite polite to people who kept asking us if we were hot in that, LOL.

(Not nearly as hot as you are in that polyester joann's brocade simplicity colonial dress, you poor teenager! It's nice you dressed up for the occasion, sincerely, but lordy you must be melting.)

Shenanigans were got up to:
robin in stocks

...and we both agreed that we really need new stays.
robin stays bone

And we ended up being basically negative images of each other (although with the same loud plaid kerchief), not really on purpose, which we found both hugely amusing and were offended that nobody else commented on it.
shoes and socks

And there was much CADD! In between yesterday and today I've added two outfits to my to-sew list for the summer, now how did that happen?

Nattering )

Are my new green stays going to be neglected horribly very shortly? Ummmmmm maaaaaaaybe? But, being mostly hand-sewing from this point, they can easily go to school with me, so they will still get done eventually. Also getting poked by a broken escaping reed all day on Saturday is a pretty good incentive...

Sewing list of Maybe

I'm kicking around a bunch of What To Maybe Sew Now That I Have Time?, and I enjoy making lists quite thoroughly, even if (when, ahem) I don't stick to them. So, to organize me own thoughts:

- Boy clothes. Like I think I've mentioned, I've put enough time into the Imaginary Boyfriend that I feel fairly confident it won't be a waste of time to sew stuff for him now and dress him up! (Not to say he's wildly enthusiastic, but he did volunteer himself, so.) The "Young Victoria" event is in April, and I want him to come to that. Boy clothes are a Brave New World for me, and I have no illusions they'll be up to my standards the first two or ten things I make, but hey. I've been sewing for more of my life than I have not been sewing at this point, so I can't completely f it up, right? Heh.
So, boy clothes, circa 1840. I'm still trying to decide the combination of Things That Will Work For Day And Evening But Not Be Wrong Enough For Me To Be Embarrassed, but first things first, first things being the shirt. I got to the very impressive point of having taped and cut the pattern pieces, cut the shirt pieces, and sewed the tucks in the shirt front pieces over the past 1.5 months. So that will need to be a thing that happens soon...

- 1838-40 day dress. This will probably not actually happen (see: boy clothes), but I have a want for a new day dress for our Young Victoria event, and lord knows I have at least two fabrics earmarked for a day dress of that period in the Stash. One linen print, one wool, and they've both been in the Stash for that purpose for a disturbing amount of years. Also, bonnet to go with this. My late 1830s bonnet is v. wintery. Plaid ribbon, etc.

- New 1770s stays. This is not quite a need yet, but it's getting there...I made these cane-boned stays as an experiment to see if I liked the boning material (wouldn't do it again, I'm too prone to rolling stays up and shoving them into a bag in the trunk of my car, but they are very comfortable if you don't count the occasional prod of a broken cane, and honestly that's more of a user error...), started breaking the canes almost immediately, and decided not to bother binding them. Three years later...I've finally broken enough of the canes that I'm getting poked in the hip more than I'd like!
The Usual Suspects are kind of Done with the 18thc, but I still volunteer at the Indian King Tavern, and should probably spend the time to make a new pair of stays to wear there before these completely die. Machine sewn and hand finished, because I have more than one pair of unfinished hand-sewn stays that will be lovely if they ever get finished. As it is... machine sew the guts and hand sew the visible bits is a better approach for me if I want them done!

- Take pictures of the black/ivory striped natural form dinner dress. Okay, that isn't sewing, but still. I need to see if I can get the, ehm, wine stain out of the skirt first...

- Work appropriate vintage dresses/skirts. I have a truly scary amount of UFOs that fall under this heading at this point, but I'm super sick of 90% of my work wardrobe, and at this point I can't afford to throw all my money at Muxxn dresses from Amazon, so. ;) (And those have to be altered anyway...especially with pencil-skirt-types, as my butt is two sizes ahead of my boobs, which is annoying but hey, good thing I don't have to pay anybody to fix 'em?)

- Gettysburg. Not for another 11 months, but I'm fairly tired of all my 1860s, and at minimum I would like to have another ballgown that doesn't weigh 30lbs, thanks. I hate that satin f'er. So...brainstorm this one and shop the Stash.

Other than that...I'm weirdly coming to terms with the fact that I need very little in my costume wardrobe these days. While I was schooling, my local peeps have moved on as well, so there seems to be far less interest in events since I've stopped being able to go. Not to say any of us have completely dropped it, but I think it's going to be pretty rare that we do an event in a period that I've nothing for.

CADD check-in

Hello there, peeps! I ought to be making a powerpoint for tomorrow's lesson, but I insist on distracting myself on here first, so nyah. It's been a while since I've really had any fun costume brainstorming, so I'm going to enjoy it for a bit while I can!

To console herself for the loss of having me to chat with everyday (I'm totally 100% the reason...egotistical much? ;) ), [personal profile] robinsnest  dreamed up an 1830s dinner party, which very quickly turned into an actual Thing That We're Doing - like, we've got the date reserved at an historic inn in the Philly area next April, an official event page on FB, and have expanded the dinner into a picnic in the afternoon too. Obviously I have no time to sew now, but...

Plan? Yeah, a bit!

I like to think I'll make new stuff for this, but honestly I have a late 30s day dress and a ball gown I'm perfectly satisfied with (yes it's a dinner not a ball but let's not split hairs here), and...I now have someone else to dress. Imaginary Boyfriend and I have been together just about a year now, and he's said multiple times that he's perfectly happy to come to costume events with me (I just have to dress him, as he's very concerned about wearing something that's slightly wrong), and I now feel confident enough in this relationship that I can sink hours and hours into sewing for someone that isn't me!

I mean...I'm not planning on hand sewing everything, but I have standards, you know.

After a few hours total of Pinterest research over the past week or so: boy clothes are more complicated than they first appear! *squints* I'm going to pretend for the time being that I am going to be able to make completely different outfits for day and evening (I am aware this will 99% likely not be the case, but shhhh), and I should be able to get most, if not all of it from the stash. The infamous stockpile of navy wool will finally be put to some use!

I have very little spending money at the moment but I think I'm going to get some of the Black Snail patterns from etsy; they seem to have favorable reviews, they're right in that early Victorian time period I want (which has very little in the way of patterns compared to men's Regency or later Victorian), they're on sale right now...and I can use my Rutgers print allowance to print the PDF's out at school if I do it before Dec. 14th! (At the very least, the shirt, waistcoat, and trousers patterns - I'm aware that I could probably figure out 2/3 of those myself, but...why should I?)

And then tell IB to buy a roll of tape and get his butt over here and make himself useful. ;)

But seriously...he's at least getting plaid trousers for daytime because how can I resist that? (Plaid has already been ok'd by the intended victim, so we're good.)

It seems I have simply legions of fans (lol), so I suppose I'll keep truckin' through my current slump in journaling and try to stay active for the time being. I do appreciate all your nice comments. :)

The next big event is Jenny-Rose's Big Hat Party; I'm kicking around ideas but I don't feel the need to start actually working on anything yet. Plus I'm waaaaaay overdue on making Taylor's painted petticoat (uh, I did start it??) and I got an order for another one this weekend, so my next couple of weeks will pretty much consist of a lot of painting!

Fairly certain I want to attempt a 1780s portrait hat a la the Duchess of Devonshire (although I don't think I want it quite that large...); I know it's your "standard" 18thc Big Hat, but dammit I think they're rather fabulous. The accompanying outfit is currently doubtful. At the moment I'm inclined to finally finish off that russet and blue silk stripe revamp, since the poor thing's been in the UFO bin for YEARS at this point. But I could also fix up my orange and blue gown (that I made in 2011 and would probably HORRIFY me if I looked at the construction/fit now...so that might be more work than I'm willing to do!), wear the chintz Dress In A Day, or wear the painted petticoat/green stripe jacket. I don't think I'll want to start a new dress from scratch when I have a hat to engineer too...but you never know when inspiration will strike! ;)

- Did my blogger dress writeup, yay me. Always good to get that out of the way; if I let it go for too long I just don't do it, though writing a blog post and an LJ post is pretty much a day's worth of work! (Not that I did them both on the same day this time. But you know what I mean.)

- There's been quite a bit of planning for upcoming costume events (and far-away costume events) over the last 48 hours: New Castle, Victorian ice skating, Belvidere next year...OMG PLAN ALL THE THINGS! Just for a bit of chatter...
  - Belvidere next year: we want to stay over in the hotel in town on Saturday night, and there may be a need for dinner dresses. Starting to extravagantly plan, who me?
  - New Castle: less extravagant planning on my part. It has been confirmed that the space for the ball is indeed very small, so I'm thinking of scrunching my big sleeves down into something more late-1830s (they were extremely annoying when they bashed into walls and display cases at the barn dance). I'd like a pelisse-robe, but fixing the sleeves on my figured cream cotton and making a pelerine would be a more achievable goal, so we'll see.
  - Victorian ice skating: for mah birfday in February, because I've been threatening it for years! The rink in Philly isn't especially picturesque, but I'll take local and modern over far-away and slightly nicer, so. I have a couple of fabrics that would work, but I'm very tempted to splurge on some plum wool-cashmere I've been eyeballing. (If I do, that will naturally ensure 60-degree weather...) Thinking I want to do late bustle right now, but I make no guarantees that won't change as I mull it over. ;)
  - Still not sure if I can make the pumpkin tea, but I doubt that will warrant a new outfit, since there's so much else to do. Maybe a new spencer if I feel so moved.
  - Halloween masquerade: I've been wrestling with my very clever sooper seekrit masquerade idea for a while. I'm a snob and really don't want to use poly or nylon if I'm putting that much work into it, but the cost of the fabric is a little silly for something I'm only going to wear once...if I even finish it in time. Silk tulle...ouch. Several yards of silk tulle...even more ouch. So, just this morning it occurred to me that I could finish off my long-neglected neoclassical dress instead. Which I have to buy exactly nothing for, and is about 2/3 done. Well...it's less impressive than my original plan (which I will still keep secret on the off chance I get another chance to make it a few years down the line!), but much more doable and I still like it!

And, tintype! I look SO UNHAPPY, lol.

Distraction!

I looked at the pinned sleeve sitting on my ironing board, thought about it, and decided I'd much rather spend the day mentally costuming everything else in the world instead.

In my defense, I was very productive on that front; I primarily made a mid-1790s dress to go under an also-theoretical open robe, but I also mentally made several things for the shop, and started an early 1890s sporting wardrobe, too.

A digression

(Because I am thinking about the 1860s I should be sewing, even if I'm not sewing it!)

I spent some time tonight actually doing the math for how much fabric I'd need for the new ballgown I'd settled on (dis one, pink and white on the right)

...and was somewhat startled to find that the fabric for dress plus new fluffy petticoat will cost more than a silk ballgown would! (A silk ballgown without 15 flounces, of course.) Like...considerably more. Like...I'm digging through fashion plates and puresilks.com more. Well, we shall see!

Back in one piece from the Pumpkin Tea, which I have a few pictures from, but writing a post to put them in seems like work. Maybe tomorrow.

Tonight I'm back to scheming about 1860s for Gettysburg! Much less effort required to do that. Yes, Gettysburg as in Remembrance Day 2015. We're starting to plan well in advance this time!

To that end, I managed to win 12 pounds of ribbon for $25 on ebay this weekend. (I was searching for green ribbon to trim the candy stripe plaid dress, and tripped over this. The lot does have a green I think will work, so...the rest of the ribbon was just a bonus!) With free shipping.

What's the next project?

I thought about working on either my new stays or starting my fancy new 1770s dress for the colonial ball, but have decided to wait til they post details. I don't know when they'll get around to doing that (I emailed today and inquired when the heck they were going to get around to posting how much tickets will cost...though a little more politely. They're not so great at the answering of emails though).

Plus I maybe want a small break from handsewing. Everything for the past, what, six months? has been handsewing.

There are quite a few upcoming events, and I have something to wear for most if not all of them. This frees me up to scheme wildly and work on whatever I want! Dangerous.

We've got:
Pumpkin tea (Regency)
Pottsgrove Manor candlelight tour (18thc)
Pennypacker Mills Christmas open house (Victorian)
Colonial Ball/Battle of Trenton (18thc)
Old City winter outing: carriage ride, ice skating at City Hall, etc. (Victorian)

So today I decided to work on something for Pennypacker Mills' Victorian Christmas. It's not a one-time-wearing kind of dress, so if I happen to be unable to get off work it can still be worn for some other event. Like maybe the ice skating, if I don't get around to making the entire 1890s outfit I want!

Ahh, it's nice to have a break from sewing deadlines for a bit!

I sewed the rest of channel 1 and all of channel 2 on the farthingale today, and last night I sewed the busk into the kirtle. I think it may be ever-so-slightly crooked. I blame the drunken monkey sewing team...

First twinge of CADD since I've started this project - which for me is really, really impressive, especially considering how long I was chewing it over before I even started! Now I'm thinking about what's on the list after Katherine's finished...originally it was going to be the 1828-30 dress and pelerine for the Costume Roulette project, but now I'm not sure any more. There have been some ideas kicking around...for one thing, we never did get our carriage rides in Old City. ;) And I now may possibly be more inclined to do my other option for Costume Roulette - 1890s. Hmmmmm.

I haven't really been sewing much...since I was watching Wives and Daughters (hadn't seen it before, thank you YouTube), and when I actually want to watch a movie I can't sew. Although now I'm eyeballing poplins on FFC. *shifty eyes* There are some very nice ones on sale for $4/yd right now... I'm having Romantic Ideas, you see.

Tomorrow's my one day off this upcoming week (how did I manage that? Going to help close another stupid store Monday and Tuesday), and I'm helping out with another dress in a day (let's see if I remember my camera...), so I shan't have much sewing time for myself. Don't worry, I'll still have plenty of time to plot about Costumes I Don't Need...
